Common, or Elvish, is a Elven language in the Faerie language family, with its earliest forms spoken by the inhabitants of Faerie that crossed over to
The Outside World. It is named after the Moon Elves, one of the ancient Fae peoples that migrated to
The Isle of Solace. Most closely related to the Sylvan, High Elvish, and Wood Elvish languages, Elvish is genealogically Fae. However, its modern vocabulary also shows major influences from Fel (about 28% of Modern Elvish words) and Dwarvish (also about 28%), plus some grammar and a small amount of core vocabulary influenced by Old Ortemhan (a Human language).
History
Modern Elvish has spread around Solace for nearly 3000 years as a consequence of the worldwide influence of the traveling cities of Mask, Mourne, and
Meander. Through all types of media from these cities, Elvish has become the leading language of international discourse and the lingua franca in many regions and professional contexts such as science, navigation and law. Elvish is the most spoken language in the world and the second-most spoken native language in the world, after Banpouri. It is the most widely learned second language and is either the official language or one of the official languages in every council nation. There are more people who have learned Elvish as a second language than there are native speakers. As of 1266, it was estimated that there were over 200 million speakers of Elvish.
