Venus

Venus is the second planet in Sol System, and home to the Venusian people. Human habitation of Venus began in 2372 as city state colonies from Earth. The semi-centralized government, the Venus Representative Collective, currently holds power over the yellow planet and it's floating cloud cities.

History

Due to early system events Venus has been covered in clouds for all of human history, and was the brightest object in the sky for most of human history.

Colonization

In 2323, after humanity started to recover from the failing of Earth’s governments and the collapse of Lunar colonies, the first permanent Exo-planet Orbital Science Station is built above Venus to test viability of Venusian clouds as filtered air and fuel materials. Then sat largely ignored for centuries as a power struggle waged in the increasingly tense relationship between Earth and Luna.   After Luna declared independence from Earth in 2364, members of the new Unites Nations of Earth turned their thought again to colonization, and started to look at Venus again. Venus was designed as a planned colony, with input and participation from multiple nation-states of the UNE. A series of domed platform cities built to float atop the couds of Venus that would operate independently as city states with Earthen governors in authority over each city. The first city finished construction in 2372 and Neue Hohen (translated: New Home) became the first of the famous Venusian Floating Cities. The second colony, Cathair, came some twenty years later in 2395.   Almost half a century later, in 2458, the third Venusian colony established as well as a USEN shipyard in orbit (built as an incentive to immigrate and begin a life off of Civil Inclusion. With Earth’s gaze turned to Mars and it’s conflicts with Luna for a number of years to follow, Venusian science, technology, and economy grew and started to flourish in it's own light. Some citizens saw the similarities in Earth’s interactions with the histories of Earth and Luna, and thoughts of revolution soon followed.

Independence

Capitalizing on the UNEN engagment on Mars as a distraction, Venusian seperatists attacked and took control of two UNE shipyards in 2491, starting the War for Venusian Sovereignty, a short and relatively bloodless war that led to Earth relinquishing control of the Venusian city states and the creation of the United Cities of Venus.

Post-war

After the war the new Venusian government retrofitted one of the previosuly captured shipyard platforms to begin building components for new cities. The following decade saw three new cities sucessfully floated on the yellow clouds of Venus, these cities were said to be the first to have been built with new Venusian architecture. The years also saw an explosion of Venusion wealth, population, and productivity.

Civil War

There were no official campaigns or pitched battles during the brief Venusian Civil War, but the battlefields became the cities themselves. Heavy fighting was seen at every dock as shuttles from the newer cities tried, with varying degrees of success, to infiltrate New Hohen, Cathair, Vandrare, and Parisette. Meanwhile attacks were carried out in smaller docks as counter forces tried to stop them from leaving their respective cities. The ensuing escalation brought the conflict to a swift and devastating end for all Venusians.
The aftermath saw the dissolution of United Cities of Venus, and in its place the new government of the Venus Representative Collective was established. Thier first order of business was to build an orbital governmental seat connected to no single city, they named it Cathair Memorial Station.

Misc.

  • 2676 - Having expanded their military capacity, Mars starts another revolution, this time backed by Venus.
  • Venus Orbital Transport Stations
  • 2466 - A Venusian company builds mining outpost on the dark side of Mercury. (Thus starting the 'Miners' lifestyle of Venus)
    • Venusian workers that Live in outposts on Mercury for a Mercurian year while they mine the dark side of the planet.
    • Much like people now who live (X) amount of time a year at home, not working, then go on a 3-6mo. Crabbing voyage. Make a bunch of money and use it to live the rest of the year at home.
  • 2530 - A Venusian university builds a science lab on Mercury. (Not a colony)
  •
  • A jest/barb among militaries is to refer to Venusian Navy as the "Wasps", for example; "we stirred the wasps nest" when the naval battle ships are deployed. And "Watch them buzz around."
  • There are three "Pressure Dome" structures that have been built and are (kind of) being tested while being used as outposts for surface operations like mining and such
  • Slang / Derogatory phrases towards Venusians:
    • Clouders
    • Vapors - (both in terms that they breathe vapor [vape], and live on, thus are weak as vapor)
    • Floaters
    • Niners (9ers) - (b/c some of the original adverts for volunteered colonization went something like 'Live on Cloud 9' or 'Help Humanity step to the Cosmos: Take a step on Cloud 9' etc…)
  • Slang / Derogatory phrases from Venusians towards others:
    • Grouders
    • Surfacists (Surface - Surfacism)
