Mars

Overview

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second-smallest planet in the Solar System, only being larger than Mercury. Mars has surface features such as impact craters, valleys, dunes and polar ice caps. It has seven small and irregularly shaped moons. Some of the most notable surface features on Mars include Olympus Mons, the largest volcano and highest known mountain in the Solar System and Valles Marineris, one of the largest canyons in the Solar System. Mars' distinct red color comes from the high amount of iron oxide found in its soil.   Mars is the only terrestrial planet other than Earth to have moons of its own. However, Mars' moons are very different from Luna. Rather than one massive satellite like Earth, Mars's satellite system more closely resembles a gas giant's array of captured asteroids. The largest moon, Eros, is just 34 kilometers across at its widest point and is far from gravitationally rounded. Beyond their irregular shape the Martian moons have an irregular origin. Only two of Mars' moons are natural satellites, Phobos and Deimos. The other five moons are former asteroids manually transferred to Martian orbit. These five moons in order of their orbital transfer are Nike, Eros, Thrax, Eos, and Cupid. Other smaller asteroids are used as counterweights for Martian spines, such as Antiope Station, but these are generally not considered moons.   The Red Planet is the capital of Claven space, separating the inner planets from the outer gas giants and Consensus jurisdiction.

Climate

The Martian climate is the most naturally habitable in the Solar System. Terraformed millennia ago before the discovery of magic, Mars' climate doesn't require any geoengineering like the orbital mirrors of Saturn, nor thaumaturgic habitation rituals.
