The Imperial School of Magic

Introduction

The Imperial School of Magic is so named as it reflects the practice of magic sanctioned in the Ossurian Empire and in accordance with The Imperial Pantheon.   The Imperial School of Magic is divided into seven smallers schools, and each are presided over by a patron god or goddess:

Additional Magical Skills

Alchemy is a magical skill any mage can learn. Enchantment is a skill that only transformation mages may perform.

Magical Ability and Training

Anyone may be born with magical ability, though some have it in greater portions than others. There does seem to be a hereditary aspect to it that The Scholars' Guild is currently studying.   The gods of the Ossurian pantheon each preside over a particular form of magic. Those people who have magical abilities are said to be divinely favored.   Those of the poorer class who are skilled usually do not get the opportunity to develop it. Unused, or uncontrolled, it burns through their life force relatively quickly. Fortunately, this is a rare case, and most of the magically gifted who cannot afford formal schooling tend to become local healers or hexers. Their skills are honed through apprenticeships with other local healers and hexers.   Those who have means or are well connected can be educated in various schools of magic. After some amount of general magical schooling, they are eventually dedicated to a particular god or goddess and educated further in their chosen school of magic. When they have completed their training, they are initiated into the magical order of their particular school.   Those who practice imperial magic are able to moderate the physically detrimental effects of magic by training and ritual. While they have a normal lifespan, their magic does require energy and can weaken them. There are potions that can be taken to enhance their skill, strength, and energy.
