Setting Overview and Introduction
Slidespace. This invaluable natural phenomena has become the galactic super-highway around which the myriad alien civilizations of the milky way have grown, met, and intermingled. Humans, aliens, and droids alike struggle, discover, and thrive on the planets and stations along its curving path. Amid conflict and races to claim resources and planets, relative galactic peace is kept tenuously via The Interplanetary Alliance. Something has begun to change, however. As strange, foreign, things begin to appear out of slidespace and paths once thought immutable begin to shift, each civilization is forced to question the things they thought they understood about their home.
Setting:
The Slidespace Chronicles is a large-scale sci-fi setting with a focus on alien relations, space travel, and discovery. In the far future, a miraculous anomaly called Slidespace allows the civilizations of the galaxy to travel quickly across the milky way. While FTL technologies enabled inter-system travel long before its discovery, no single engine remotely compares to the effectiveness of this looped space-warping pathway. Many different species have met each other through slidespace travel. This intermingling eventually led to the current day where the different species surrounding Slidespace strive to keep the peace and have begun to live together more and more in the neutral territories known as the The Local Alliance. Within the Local Alliance, cultures and ideals clash and mix into tentative and new forms. Many of the older factions see this neutral territory as a glorified social experiment. Others perceive it as a haven and vision of the future. The more cynical among them regard it as simply PR for the actual interplanetary alliance, and believe it will crumble the day that agreement does. In reality, the Local Alliance is simply the first faction created with no specific species origin. As the newest faction, it still seeks to carve out both respect and an identity for itself among the other major galactic players. It's in this faction that the conflicts of the galaxy are displayed in close quarters. The diplomatically minded hope it can be a place where solutions can be put to the test. Scientific Advancement has come far since the days of simple computers and air-flight. The present day relies heavily on complex and powerful technologies once only dreamed of. Massive stations hover in the void launching ships across slidespace. Scientists learn to wind and unwind the genetic blueprints of life. Mechanical minds begin to act not too different from their creators. Technology is blossoming, and the consequences of it's power are yet unseen. The galaxy is ripe for change.Species Roster:
Slidespace has connected many different species and civilizations. Each member species is given a more in-depth article describing their biology, culture, and history in that order; here are brief descriptions and links to give you a quick overview of all our galactic neighbors. Each of these species can be found within the Local Alliance, so it's wise to know who to expect.
Humans are the second most populous species in the galaxy, making up the majority of Sol sector residents. Their population is large enough to split into multiple distinct galactic factions. They are well known for their love of digital media, droids, and commerce.
Droids are artificial beings with digital minds. Primarily built by humans with notable exceptions, droids have recently begun to increase in intelligence without the intervention or updates of their creators. This has been cause for both study, celebration, and concern, depending on who you ask.
Chi'Suut are furred, social aliens native to the desert planet Chi'Kciponn. They have close diplomatic ties to humans, and are notorious for their innate strength and overall cooperative natures. Chi'suut tend to live in work groups called cliques, and see no value in blood relations.
The Trallyr are a tall, colorful species with bird-like traits. Having migrated from deep space to escape a supernova, the pacifistic Trallyr are relatively new to the sector and are in the process of establishing their new home world Jainonn. Trallyr are tracked into specific jobs based on the colors of their "feathers"
Terrkarakki are a lizard-like alien species and the most populous and prolific galactic settlers known to the alliance. The Terrkarakki (or 'Krakki') are most known for their multiple life stages, iron stomachs, and general disregard for the safety of their legions of children.
Glyceans are aquatic worm-like aliens that can generate strong electricity in their bodies. Since they require liquid to breathe, and only communicate via electric signals, glyceans make use of specially designed exosuits to live among their air-breathing neighbors.
The Jalgar are an offshoot species of humanity formed from the genetically-mutated survivors of a lost colony ship sent out before humanity's space glory-days. They tend to be sensitive about their human origins and seek to carve their own identity.
Vek-7 Parasites are organisms that take over the body and seek to mimic and fit in with their host species. In recent years, a small population of these creatures have gained sentience, causing a storm of ethical dilemmas across the local alliance faction and beyond.
Corkitsit are enigmatic aliens about which next to nothing is known. They appear inexplicably in space stations inhabited by multiple alien species in order to buy and sell goods. They refuse to give any information to the curious, and are notoriously impossible to confine.
