Skysea

Skysea is a science-fantasy setting where all the peoples live on islands of land, floating in an endless sky. Far below is a layer of dense, turbulent clouds, and below that, an ocean of water. This ocean is said to be where the lands and peoples of Skysea originated, but now is only a dangerous roiling surface inhabited by deadly predators. When or how the islands were set into the sky, no one knows. The people of Skysea look up and out instead, and in these directions, no limit has yet been found.   Life must go on, and the peoples of Skysea live, form states, trade, and war among each other. They do this by constructing flying vessels that allow them to travel from island to island. All these peoples and goods traveling back and forth are a tempting target, and the skysailors must be on guard against pirates, raiders, and conquerors.   While some governments have soldiers to counter these threats, a hearty breed of adventuresome folk find themselves at the fore of these dangers: Freeblades. These individuals, so called as they are rarely aligned to any particular nation, seek thrill and adventure, moving from place to place and using their skills, wits, and weapons to survive, and hopefully profit.   Strap on your rapier, check the charge on your beamgun, and watch your footing while on-deck, friend - it's a long way down!
