Green Arrow Bamboo

This bamboo is found in the heart of the Outer Realm, as well as on the edges of the Inner Realm. Although it's plentiful and fast-growing, it's still a highly prized resource. Not only harvested by charters, many trade merchants and commercial companies go on expeditions to collect as much of the bamboo as possible. Although it's not exactly expensive, it's quickly becoming popular as an everyday resource - so much so that even with the widespread and fast-growing nature of the plant, it's been put on a conservation list and has been placed under the protection of the sky's governing council.

Magical Properties

Agillis nectar is the main magical property of the bamboo that makes it so special. The nectar joins water and other nutrients being pumped through the vascular tubes of the bamboo stalks, seeming to give the plant seems to have a life of its own. Although the bamboo's roots are thin, they reach deep into the clouds they're planted on, and they allow the plant to move around slightly as it sees fit. Somehow it can sense change in its environment, detecting danger in the air and sliding impossibly far distances along the ground overnight as the pressure from their roots propels them across the clouds.   The agillis nectar is highly valuable, and Skydweller society would not be the same today without it. It's used in reinvigorating medicines, cahve recipes, and, most commonly, construction. The dusts, powders, and elixirs that engineers use to instruct trees how to grow into buildings are all based on the agillis nectar.

Other Uses

It's not only the nectar; the stalks of green arrow bamboo are highly sought after for many different purposes. These include:

  • Construction: Although Skydweller buildings are grown from trees, bamboo staffs are incredibly valuable to use when a quick, temporary structure needs to be used. They can also be added to existing buildings to help with the layout, variety in architecture, or whenever something strong and flexible is in high demand. The fast-growing nature of the bamboo, as well as its widespread growing habitats, make it quick efficient and still conservative to use.

  • Food: The bamboo is high in fiber and nutrients, which make it highly valued when it comes to feeding dragons, who need not only large calorie intakes, but large mineral and protein ones as well. It can even be used in dishes that prepare bread, pasta, and sometimes even yogurt and cheese!

  • Everyday products: With so little variety of resources in the sky, the arrow bamboo is super helpful when it comes to the making of household items like baskets, paper, and even fabrics and clothing.

  • Scientific study: And, of course, scientists and botanists are always eager to study both the magical and ordinary parts of the bamboo to further their knowledge, and maybe even discover how to domesticate it.
Conservation Status
Endangered; harvesting licence required - regular checkups to see if rules are being followed
Average Height
45 ft
Average Length
2-4 inches

Domestication:

Why...won't...it...hold...still!?
-annoyed botanist

Despite the many uses of the arrow bamboo, attempts to domesticate it have proved...unsuccessful. It seems to enjoy toying with botanists, scientists, and businessmen alike. In fact, even harvesting it proves difficult. The nectar that gives it life also seems to give it spunk. Either great dedication or great peacemaking needs to be used before any sort of interaction with the bamboo happens; if not, it can produce staggeringly huge electric shocks, or just bonk you on the head.   Although Skydwellers have perfected harvesting techniques, they haven't perfected domestication strategies, so the bamboo remains wild to this day.

This left me just enough hints about your world that I want to know more. I'm not sure exactly the genre, but... dragons who eat bamboo? People who live in the sky and grow houses? Count me in!

Thank you! I'm glad to hear it :D Yeah, definitely a fantasy world, but the lore and magic is all over the place. But that's one of its charms :)

May your worldbuilding hammer always fall true! Also, check out the world of the Skydwellers for lots of aerial adventures.

That says something about me, because I *love* worlds that ARE all over the place. Some of my favorite stories are like that. So it confirms my decision to follow this world!
