GIANT SPIDEERSSSS

Content Warning! Spiders.
Yeah, nope.
-student zoologist
Giant Grey-Footed Spiders, also called 'AAAAA what is that?' by a number of new silkweaver interns, are large spiders that can be found in (you guessed it) the Outer Realm. They're covered in black, shaggy fur and can be almost as tall as a human when fully grown. They live in both forests and caves far away from any outposts or stations, spinning large webs to capture prey that can be as large as....well, humans.   Although the Spiders are aggressive and will attack humans on sight, they tend to steer clear of dragons - unless that dragon has somehow been caught in their web. If they can, however, they'll snatch humans and carry them off through the undergrowth of forests or into small tunnels of caves, making it harder for dragons to follow them and, well...most of the time, the humans don't make it back. Charters have been known to be snatched away from as close as ten feet away from their party. Only a few have been known to survive, since the Spiders are relatively immune to shock powder and can only be stopped by physical weapons.

Dangerous, but useful

Despite the danger of the creatures, they're still carefully tracked and sought after, as their silk is incredibly valuable. It's well-known on the ground that spider silk has many uses, and in the sky, silk is even more valuable. The uses of cob silk include (but aren't limited to):

  • Medicine - cob silk can be used as both bandages, ingredients in medicinal salves, and even sutures. The strength of the silk makes it perfect for treating wounds that dragons have sustained. Wing injuries now have a 63% chance of healing correctly if stitched with cob silk, a much higher chance than the previous 17%.

  • Strings for music instruments

  • Cables - this one is super cool. All Skydweller buildings are grown from trees, but this takes time and effort. The tensile strength of the silk means that it can help bring variety and strength to architecture.
Scientists have yet to discover if the spiders' venom can be used, but they remain hopeful. For now, charters take quiet opportunities to harvest cob silk but are extremely careful in dealing with any place that may be inhabited by the spiders.
Urgh, why is it so sticky? No, I know why, Gerald, I read the bestiary, I'm just trying to make some small talk, since this isn't exactly a stress-free situation!

Just call them what they are. They're giant spiders, for fall's sake!

The Spiders are called a number of different names, mainly by charters with a fondness for etymology. These include:
  • Attercops
  • Atorcoppes
  • Run!
  • HELP ME!
  • Spinner Cobs
  • Ooh look an abandoned NOPE! NOT ABANDONED!
  • Woah, that's a big spider. We'll just call them...Giant Spiders.
  • Oh, look! They've got grey feet. No, Samantha, that's not a dumb observation, just you wait!
