Warp Pearl

Warp Pearls are a resource found in the center of most islands. They are found in large numbers usually. When found, they are marble sized pearls of magic. They constantly fold within itself, giving it a moving appearance. Left by itself, the pearls will literally roll over any surface. In the ground, they keep this marble shape waiting while in the stone, simply waiting to be dug out. The pearls are sky blue.   Warp pearls are also found as gifts from the Nerre. Many Cultists receive warp pearls as gifts for completing tasks given to them.   Warp Pearls are a useful resource with many strange properties. Firstly, when integrated into clockwork the pearl constantly winds the device. Also, it seems to change and warp the clockwork over time. Causing the device to become more complex and durable. Strangely, no changes have ever been actually witnessed in the act of changing. These changes occur overnight, or when no one is looking. Pearls also animate the corpses that pearls are placed inside. Often, the pearls need to be sewn in so as to not fall out. Pearls also can be placed within a living person. This grants the user the ability to cast strange magics but also drives them mad over time. These people are referred to as witches or warlocks.   Warp Pearls are also unstable and prone to causing changes. At random intervals, they alter whatever they are in. Clockwork and undead change its programming and gains new functions or sentients. Living beings gain mutations. Sometimes this can lead to dangerous creations. Clockwork sometimes gains a blood-lust and become something called a Ripper. Undead sometimes regain their memories, but lack empathy. Warlocks go mad with power and can cause great destruction.   Warp Pearls represent a common value for currency. All currencies are compared to each other by using the value of the Warp Pearl. This makes the Warp Pearl a sign of wealth and luxury as well. Sometimes they are integrated into jewelry and clothing. Illegal drinks are created from placing warp pearls in brandy and other alcohols, giving the drink a buzzing sensation. Some illegal goods dealers trade directly with warp pearls.

Warp Pearls are the backbone of clockwork technology. Because they are able to continuously wind a clockwork device, they are used in complex machines such as automatons.
