Winging Language in Shireon | World Anvil

Winging

Okay, newcomers. Today we're going to learn something called Winging. It's a silent form of communication only the Ravens know. I will also take this moment to remind you all that if we ever find out you are the reason some random outsider knows Winging, the consequences will not only include you and the outsider - you'll get the pleasure to see every single piece of your life in ruins first.
— Overheard at a training session for new Raven recruits

Winging is a sign language used by the Ravenous Ravens. As the Ravens usually do activities where secrecy and stealth is important the sign language is priceless. Winging can both be used for one way communication, where a sentry stands visible for everyone on the mission to give warnings and go signal to the others, and for two-way communication between agents when speaking isn't a good idea.

Winging is supposed to be global. In this way every member of the Ravens can communicate, even when they are in another lodge's territory. There has been some development that resulted in some signs that are specific for one lodge, yet since most signs are global, including the most important ones, this is usually not a problem.

Two Versions

Winging comes in two distinct versions - Sentry Winging and Conversational Winging. They're both usually just called Winging, making the context of when it's mentioned crucial to know which one it is.

Sentry Winging

Created to give short, important pieces of information without being noticed when standing out in the open, Sentry Winging is based on everyday gestures.

Conversational Winging

Conversational Winging is much more complex than Sentry Winging, and more like a real language.

Common Phrases

Although not having any actual words or phrases, here are some examples of Sentry Winging signs commonly used among the Ravens. The ones listed are universal for all the lodges, while others might be specific for one lodge, almost like regional dialects.
