Kharemjun

"This is nothing boy, here, the sweet winds of the sea still soothes our skin. We are yet to have our backs charred by the merciless sun at the city outskirts." Vieda wafted a hand as if to funnel a breeze towards her linen-covered face, the narrow, winding streets of Modeyjiin did not at all help with the scorching heat of the summer sun, that charring globe hovering high above the mud coloured, brick houses. As they soon enough entered a wider main street, he glanced towards the far end, were a massive, glittering dome rose high above the humble, unassuming dwellings of the residents."     Kharemjun, is an ancient and decadent tyranny that some claim to be the oldest kingdom in Avander, though this is hotly contested among scholars. Whereas most kingdoms of Avander have found themselves by and large brought into the folds of the Church of Dormin, Kharemjun is still dominated by a dark fascination of the occult and otherworldly. It's populace are mainly men of older stock than the other Western kingdoms, swarthy, tall, and with long flowing hair, mostly covering themselves with coarse, tough silks and linen to ward off the scorching sun that terrorizes all living things finding themselves within the vast cauldera of the Khaan desert. An infamous trait of it's geography is the Hell's Maw, a gargantuan, smoldering crater that lies just at the outskirts of Al-Azar, a city renowned for it's dangerous streets, and many gilded temples. Hell's Maw is a horrific mystery to scholars, and a source of legends and tales for the locals, who claim that Devils and Daemons crawl up at night to find prey at the city outskirts, or another variation has it that there are flesh eating plants that slither up at night to draw blood from sleeping men that find themselves outside the city. Wether the wild tales hold any merit or not matters little, for the citizens of Al-Azar, and Kharemjun at large, are superstitious of the unnatural and fantastical, often lining the tresholds of doorways and windows with salt to ward off evil beings.

Geography and Climate

Far and wide, Kharemjun is known as the Kingdom upon the Dunes, for it is home to the vast and inhospitable Khaan Desert, a stretch of land bereft of rain or moisture for the majority of a year. During daylight hours, the temperature rises to a scorching high, while at night, it falls to a freezing cold that puts even the hardiest of northerners to the test. The majority of Kharemjun's cities are built near oasises, or in near mountains where precipitous droplets of rain and moisture are possible.

Governance

The capital, Modeyjiin, is built upon the shores of the vast inland Venian Sea, and it is from the gold-domed palace at the city's summit here, that King Vyzerin rules his realm with an iron fist. Unlike it's neighbouring kingdoms, Kharemjun is not based on a feudal structure at all, but is a ruthless tyranny, where the king holds near unlimited executive and legislative power. What the king decrees, his subjects obey, despite this, Kharemjun may strike the unwary traveller as a near lawless place. The vast Khaan desert makes central governance challenging to maintain, wich is why the king relies on his extended family of nobles to govern the many city states in his stead, with liberty to make some local decrees without much wider impact. The King rarely meddles in private affairs, and acts that may be deemed unseemly and unlawful in the other kingdoms of Avander are openly tolerated on the sand-swept streets of Kharemjun, even Cambions are sometimes left alone without much effort put into their persecution.

Religion

The residents of the kingdom upon the dunes are not widely converted to the Church of Dormin's tenets, though brave missionaries nonetheless make the dangerous trek across the Khaan Desert to spread his gospel to the uncaring populace. While acts of cruelty are not given much thought in this despotic desert kingdom, most residents are a superstitious lot, often spending exorbitant sums of gold on amulets and elixirs meant to protect them from evil spirits or wicked things. The godess Lamashtu has a significant following in the city of Al-Azar, and the god Estan as well is widely regarded as a patron to the many scholars, alchemists, and historians who travel trough this ancient land to uncover the secrets of the enigmatic race of giants that dwelled there in the forgotten past.
