Havenwood

The town of Havenwood lays within a valley of the same name, nestled in the rugged embrace of a low mountain range, the Havenwood Peaks. This mountain range is in the eastern part the Manithral Region. It was founded only a few years ago by the secretive loxodon Theurgist, Zyphera Elderglim, and her former adventuring companion, the Dwarf Harnar Coalbeard, Havenwood has quickly transformed from a mere idea into a thriving hub of activity.

The origins of Havenwood are as practical as they are ambitious. Zyphera, known for her arcane prowess and divine connections, discovered she owned rich veins of various minerals including both Gold Core and Iron Core. The deposits were spread throughout the Havenwood Valley. Recognizing the potential, she and Harnar devised a plan to exploit the land. They decided to lease the land to fortune seekers and build a town to support their mining endeavors. The arrangement proved wildly successful, drawing a flood of prospectors, tradespeople, and adventurers eager to forge their fortunes.

While Zyphera remains a reclusive figure, ensconced in her mysterious cliffside tower, Harnar has become the face of Havenwood's daily life. His leadership has ensured that the town not only survives but thrives, supported by the resources drawn from the rich earth and the strategic use of magic in its early construction. The town benefits from its proximity to natural features such as a large river, a hot spring, and a reliable mountain spring, ensuring that its residents are well supplied, and the landscape is well-managed.

Government

Havenwood operates under a unique governance structure led primarily by Harnar Coalbeard, with the overarching ownership and ultimate authority resting with Zyphera Elderglim, the founder and landowner of the valley. The town’s governance integrates direct leadership with significant input from various guilds, encapsulating a blend of individual authority and collaborative planning.

Leadership and Structure

Havenwood is directly managed by Harnar, who functions as the town's chief administrator. His responsibilities encompass all aspects of town management, from policy development to daily operations. Assisting him is an advisory Council of Guilds, comprising representatives from the Miners, Farmers, Merchants, Craftsmen, and Hostelers guilds. This council meets semi regularly to propose and deliberate on policies, ensuring sectorial interests are considered. However, the final decision-making power rests with Harnar.

A small bureaucracy supports the town's administrative functions. This group consists of several clerks who manage essential records, including mine claims, tax collection, and land leases. This system ensures the town's operations are orderly and that its economic activities are well-documented and regulated. Although Harnar makes the final decisions, the effective administration of these daily tasks is crucial for maintaining Havenwood's functionality and growth.

Law and Order

Security in Havenwood is managed by The Ebonbound Sentinels, led by Bekass Gillywiggins, a seasoned mercenary and an old companion of Harnar. This mercenary guild doubles as the town’s guard, maintaining peace and enforcing law. The guards are structured to ensure round-the-clock security: during the day, at least four guards patrol the town at random intervals, while at night, three guards remain active, with two on patrol and one stationed at the guardhouse. More are always on standby in case there is an emergency. This system ensures that

Industry & Trade

Strategically positioned outside the direct influence of any neighboring kingdoms, Havenwood maintains practical trade agreements with various trading consortiums, ensuring a steady supply of necessary goods. These arrangements are pragmatic and focus on the town's sustainability rather than forming political alliances.

History

The Loxodon Theurgist Zyphera Elderglim was a noted adventurer and held a high-ranking position in the faith of the goddess Leyrana. She spent much of her later years exploring the unknown regions of the Manithral Region. 63 years ago she claimed land in the unexplored eastern mountains of the region. She spent many years working with the closest kingdoms getting to recognize her claim. With some they asked great deeds and when that happened she called in her former adventuring companion Harnar. With other kingdoms, all they asked of her was gold. After many years and some help of her friends,  her claim was secure.

The Tower

The first building of Havenwood was built long before the founding of the town. It was built nearly 50 years ago with the construction of a formidable tower, erected by Zyphera Elderglim. Situated on a cliff’s edge overlooking what would later be called the valley of Havenwood, the purpose of this tower has remained shrouded in mystery. Zyphera constructed the tower amidst the untamed wilderness, leveraging her powerful blend of arcane and divine magic. The tower, initially the only sign of civilization in the region, played a crucial role in Zyphera's secretive research and served as a beacon for the later development of the town.

When the tower was nearing construction a nearby abbey was founded as well. It was built by the request of Zyphera. She paid for the building of an abbey dedicated to the goddess Leyrana. She has continued to be a patron of the abbey. As a high ranking and power follower of Leyrana, Zyphera has influence over the abbey but does directly control it. However, they do defer to her wisdom.

Planning and Construction

Approximately four years ago, the vision for Havenwood began to take shape under the guidance of Zyphera Elderglim and Harnar Coalbeard. This initial year was dedicated to meticulous planning, with assistance from the highly educated members of the nearby abbey. Together, they crafted a comprehensive town plan that not only catered to immediate needs but also anticipated future expansion. The chosen site lay beneath the cliff that supported Zyphera’s tower, adjacent to the valley’s main waterway and near a beneficial hot spring.

The location was strategically selected for its natural advantages. The nearby hot spring was envisioned as a natural power and heating source for the town. They laid planned out a massive piped heating system using the hot water and sched out plans how ot harness the steam to help power processing the ores. They also took advantage of a large mountain spring nearby to supply the town with continuous, pressured, piped in clean water.

With a clear plan in place, Zyphera and Harnar mobilized their considerable resources and contacts to recruit building experts skilled in magic-enhanced construction. These specialists expedited the development of the town. They quickly clearing space the town and built the core frame work for the town.

While the mages worked their magic in constructiong the building Harnar called in the most skilled dwarven metal and stone smiths. The metal smiths went about laying the pipe systems throughout the town while the stone smiths built the aqueduct, connecting the mountain spring to the town..

Central to the town’s design was a large square, featuring a water fountain that would serve as the heart of Havenwood. This square was intended for market activities and community gatherings, fostering a sense of unity and commerce. Initial structures included housing for 500 inhabitants, stables, a bathhouse, three buildings designated for use as inns or taverns, and, of course, Harnar’s mansion. It also included civic buildings such as a guardhouse with a jail, an adventurer’s hall, and a large church dedicated to Leyrana—complete with an additional library. This church was staffed by members from the abbey, ensuring that the spiritual and educational needs of the town were met from the outset.

Zyphera and Harnar also made sure to build state-of-the-art steam powered processing plants for the mined ore. Particularly the Gold Core Ore which can be difficult to process and is more potent the sooner it is processed.

Lastly the surrounding area was prepared to be farmed to help supply the town so they were no dependent on trade as their only source of survival.

Simultaneously, Zyphera and Harnar were proactive in promoting Havenwood beyond its borders. They disseminated information about the metals that were discovered and they organized settler caravans to arrive in the following year, as soon as the town was ready for habitation. Their efforts were not limited to attracting miners; they also targeted farmers, merchants, and other business owners, aiming to establish a well-rounded community that could sustain itself beyond mere gold extraction and processing. This strategic diversity was intended to ensure that Havenwood would flourish as a self-sufficient community, rather than just another transient mining outpost.

Growth and Development

Upon its official founding three years ago, Havenwood quickly transformed from a planned settlement into a vibrant, living town. The foresight in its design and the allure of wealth brought a wave of settlers, eager for new opportunities. Managed by Harnar Coalbeard, the town's growth was both rapid and structured. The first wave of settlers primarily consisted of dwarven miners, specifically invited by Harnar to help establish the initial mining operations and to construct and manage the refineries. This specialized workforce was instrumental in setting up the foundation for Havenwood's thriving mining industry.

In addition to miners, farmers, merchants, and craftsmen were drawn to the town, attracted by the well-publicized prospects of wealth and a balanced community life. As these diverse groups arrived, the foundational buildings constructed during the initial year—residences, markets, inns, and the newly established miners' guild—were swiftly populated and expanded. This influx led to the rapid development of additional infrastructure, including more housing, expanded marketplaces, and specialized shops catering to the needs of a growing population.

Security was a paramount concern for Harnar, who reached out to an old adventuring buddy, Bekass Gillywiggins, a gnome who had founded a mercenary guild. Bekass eagerly agreed to assist and brought his group of mercenaries to serve as the town's guard force, ensuring safety and order as Havenwood expanded.

The town's layout, planned around the central square with its fountain, became a focal point for both commerce and social interaction, embodying the communal spirit envisioned by its founders. The strategic location next to resources like the hot springs and the mountain spring water supply not only made living conditions favorable but also facilitated the growth of leisure and health-related businesses, such as bathhouses and spas.
