The Torch Bearer

The Torch Bearer is a rare find, proof of civilization that predates the known world. Discovered by accident by scavengers from Sealloch, excavation of it and the surrounding structures have been going at a slow but steady place for a couple of decades, as devoting ressources to the digsite is not seen as a massive priority. Local historian and folklorist are, however, still working to uncover and protect the ruins, hoping to not only learn more about this mysterious civilization, but perhaps also uncover beneficial secrets as well.

Purpose / Function

The parts of the statue that has been dug up so far, the head, shoulders and raised left hand, shows a masculine figure made of flames wearing a crown and holding a torch. Current theories are that it is a depiction of a deity of flame or perhaps a representation of a powerful local figure associated with fire. The raised torch is believed to perhaps be a symbol of enlightenment or perhaps hope.

Alterations

Being buried in the earth for countless centuries has preserved the statue, but also subjected it to its own unique wear and tear. Several fragments of the crown have broken off and the arm was dangerously close to falling off until new support could be added.

Architecture

The statue is carved from marble, with exquisite detail. The flames that make up the figures body are incredibly detailed and when subjected to candle or torchlight, even seems to flicker. It is by all accounts a masterpiece of craftsmanship.

History

The origin of the Torch Bearer is unknown. In 34 ATF, it was found during an excavation by locals from the city of Sealloch. Cartographers determined, based on the formations of the earth, that structures were buried in the ground. Originally believed to be a hidden military bunker, excavatins were started to recover the presumed valuable supplies. To their surprise, the ruins they uncovered were of an even older date.   In 37 ATF, the first parts of the Torch Bearer were uncovered. It was named in 38 ATF when it became clear was holding a torch.

Tourism

Though a bit out of the way, it is not uncommon for locals to go visit the site and watch the statue. It is believed to bring good luck and has by now been associated with any number of deities with domain over fire.
