Elysium & The Phenomena of Dreams
Once, the people of Azoth could not dream. Chaoxing and the gods that came before him had no concept of dreams at all, no god or mortal dreamed. It was only after Caecilius, He Who Sleeps Beneath, fell from the sky like a shooting star and landed in Azoth that he brought Elysium.
Elysium is a parasitic substance, one that is not from this world. After the death of Chaoxing, Elysium slowly made its way into the mind of mortals and every so often it triggers a dream or a nightmare. While on the normal plane of existence this is common, whenever someone in Azoth has either a dream or nightmare, it manifests somewhere in Azoth as a nihil.
Elysium is a versatile tool, as it can be used as 'magic'. Mages harvest the substance or attempt to dream on their own. Some mages of certain traditions carry around syringes of dubious medicines to put them in a half-sleep state to cast magic more easily. Dreams are usually used for more benevolent magic, such as a healing, as it is harder to manifest but safer. Nightmares are considered dark magic, as they are easy to manifest but hard to control. It is rather common for mages to meet their end by being devoured by their nightmares.
Manifestation
Elysium looks like a tar-like substance, however it has the consistency of blood. It is black but color shifts into a variety of colors, mostly violets and reds. There are dots of light within it, looking similar to glitter or stars in a nebula.
