The Isles of Sherberre
Structure
The Isles of Sherberre are ruled by a King and/or Queen, who have the final say in all matters of rule at a national level. Power is, however, somewhat devolved to the isles, who all have their own King and/or Queen who make decisions on a local level. Many monarchs choose to appoint a court of advisors to help them make the best decisions for their people.
Culture
The Isles of Sherberre is a country that is constantly on the edge of civil war. The separate islands all have their own culture and customs, but they all have one thing in common - they think they're the greatest island on that side of The Shard. The people are proud of their communities, but they're more worried about their immediate neighbours to be concerned for the other nations of Shardinia. The Isles are a very family oriented nation, with long lineages of great houses looking after the many islands and their inhabitants. The houses vie for popularity among their people, taking great care to ensure their island's population is looked after as well as possible.
History
The Isles of Sherberre was founded in 968 in an attempt to kill two very large and terrifying birds with one stone. The citizens of Sherbert were under siege from Marog Thistlespear, the fearsome dragon of North Sherbert, who had been laying waste to towns and villages for decades. The communities of Sherbert were also too focussed on each other, and they'd have no chance of survival in The War for Celestia if they didn't come together. The United States of Turmerica had taken the upper hand in the War for Celestia with the Red Storm, a deadly new incendiary weapon, and the houses of Sherbert needed to come together to avoid falling behind. They came together and decided upon a plan of action - they would call for a parley with Marog, and would pledge their fealty to the great dragon in exchange for her services in battle. Marog accepted, on the conditions that the country and its wealth would be ceded to her as Queen, and the houses of the Isles would bring her suitable tribute each year. With Marog on their side, the Isles of Sherberre was a formidable force during the War for Celestia, and Marog's presence on the battlefield gave the greatest minds in the world a headache.
During the Age of Invention, the Isles' attention was divided between their own internal conflicts and ensuring they were a present and formidable force in the world. Some Sherbertarians believed that Marog's power over the Isles of Sherberre was too far-reaching, and unrest between pro and anti-Marog factions began to grow. The other nations were also starting to question the long-term viability of having an incredibly powerful and increasingly violent dragon ruling over the Isles. Marog's considerable power would be difficult for either Turmeric or Taurine to contain in the event of a surprise attack on their borders, so they began to turn their minds towards a solution.
It was Taurinestein that came up with a solution to their dragon problem. Taurish scientists had been working on a weapon that could cast a powerful banishment spell on Marog, sending her to a different plane of existence. They purchased a large, magnificently cut Alanmantium stone from Turmeric, which they used to power the device. Once their weapon was ready, a small army was sent from Taurine to Sherbert to take on the dragon and the forces loyal to her. The battle began with infantry and mounted combatants, but the Taurish forces were waiting for Marog's arrival to reveal their secret weapon. Soon enough, Marog descended onto the battlefield, but her tenure was short-lived. Her loyal followers watched on in horror as the great dragon disappeared in an instant, never to be seen again. The Taurish forces made a hasty retreat after using the device, happy in the knowledge that their mission had been accomplished.
For the remainder of the Age of Invention, the Isles were focussed on regaining the power they lost through Marog's disappearance. They did have one advantage on their side. Through the years of tributes to Marog, the dragon had accumulated an incredible hoard, making the Isles the wealthiest country in Shardinia.
Nowadays, the houses still despise each other, but since the Age of Peace have been locked in a treaty that explicitly requires them all to be nice to each other. They all feign cordiality, keeping up appearances to be sure they aren't the ones to break the treaty first.
