Raleigh, North Carolina

Written by: Coupe

Raleigh, North Carolina. The city of Oaks, capital of the state, one of the fasted growing cities in the CAS full of gorgeous views, friendly neighbors and great opportunities!   I got mugged outside my apartment last year and a dwarf stopped his car to get out and laugh at me.   Okay, so it's not perfect like the brochures says it is, but it's my home so I gotta root for it. Besides, Raleigh's one of the nicer places in the CAS and definitely one of the biggest, so you're bound to find something you like in it!
This article's just here to help categorise the various locations of interest and is still under construction. No refunds.

Demographics

Metahuman demographics are distributed as follows:
  • Human: 65%
  • Elf: 12%
  • Dwarf: ~ 2%
  • Ork: ~ 16.5%
  • Troll: ~ 1.8%
  • Other: ~ 2.7%

Awakened individuals make up 0.06% of Raleigh's registered citizens, below average for the CAS, but they also have a 0.003% incidence rate of known technomancers, which is well above the national average.

Government

Raleigh currently operates under the same council-manager system of government it had pre-awakening, with the Mayor and seven other council representatives elected every two years to manage the city at large, but with an additional three seats for 'representative financial interests' to sit and represent all the corporate interests in and around Raleigh, currently held by Saeder Krupp, Ares Macrotechnology and Minutemen Tactical Investments.

Industry & Trade

Raleigh's biggest moneymakers have always been the medical and biotech industries (and still are) along with some backing from financial institutions, but as with all sprawls its business portfolios have diversified into anything and everything that the presiding megacorps thing they can squeeze in, from software development to gun-manufacturing to custom-made household pets. The job-economy's been in a slump for the past couple of decades however, since the whole fiasco with Forestville, but the new arcologies springing up are hopefully looking to ammend the growing problem of disenfranchised wage-slaves, in their own megacorporate ways.

Architecture

Raleigh's had a lot of architectural fads over the years, particularly Georgian and Federal building styles, but the long reigning flavor-of-the-decade right now is 'Nouveau Deco'. In theory, it's meant to be a nostalgic mix of 1920s parisian and late 20th-century neo-futurism. In practice, every building contractor and corp had their own idea as to how the styles should mix while trying to intergrate their own signatures, bouncing the city's looks between 1905 and 3905 AD.
The style is most consistent in government constructions, but at least one dolt got mixed up and went for art-nouveau instead of art-deco in one of their more recent urban-planning ideas. The clash was so bad, it was almost a relief when the new street-lights were being pulled apart and made into swords,

Geography

At a little over four-hundred and twenty feet above sea-level on the edge of the hilly Piedmont area, Raleigh's climate was already mercurial at the best of times, with muggy summers and freezing winters under a sky that just doesn't want to let up on the clouds. Come the awakening and the megacorps letting loose on the enviroment, and now Raleigh's one of the coldest sprawls in the CAS, it's always either raining or snowing, and neither the rain or snow are the kind you wanna be caught out in, chummer.
