Every Witch Way

The runners are window-browsing and approached on the street by what looks like a student in his twenties. He asks them to hear him out real quick, as he needs their help. He'll buy them a drink if they just hear him out. If they agree, he quickly leads them to a local café. There, he explains why he wants to hire them.   The Mr. Johnson lost contact with an online friend who went completely off the grid. He's extremely worried and wants the runners to track her down, based on a picture showing her next to a bar. They don't have to bring her back, or rescue her if she's in trouble, all he needs them to do is hand her a burner commlink. That way, if she needs his help, she can call with that. His number is preprogrammed under a secret routine, to help disguise the comm in case anyone else finds it. He even offers four grand each in advance, as half the promised payment.

The Cool Glitch is a street witch from Europort, known for a friendly demeanor. She spends a lot of time in the Reefer District, the criminal-run entertainment district of Europort. And yes, she went off the grid recently, to concern of some of her friends. Others know she does it occasionally and assume there is no big deal this time.   The Cool Glitch is an artist as well. She turns corporate garbage into modern art pieces with actual working functionality, as a criticism on the waste left behind by corporate greed. Her off-grid periods are for when inspiration strikes and she is working on a new piece, a fact she mostly keeps to herself. This time is no different.

The Run

The picture of the Cool Glitch is a good start, as it includes a bar in the background. That bar can be easily tracked to the Reefer District. After that, the runners have to convince the locals that they're the good guys here, so they're willing to share info. That, or they hack commlinks and camera archives.   Either way, the runners get to figure out where their target supposedly has a hideout. Just gotta enter the underground maze of former railroad and subway tunnels, decades old and already replaced with modern ones. The place is a bit of a maze, but the Cool Glitch left some paint and supplies scattered about, like a trail of breadcrumbs. It will take some time, but not that much before the runners manage to track her down.

Word on the street

"I need your help! Please hear me out! I'll buy you drinks, okay? Please follow me!"

"I just don't know where she went. It's not right, disappearing like that."

"Hey, ain't that the Cool Glitch? Yeah, I know her. She a street witch, a good one. Makes damn fine art too. Why, what you want from her, eh? Do we need to have words, or..."

"Good job keeping our district safe. Let us know if you need a safehouse or some smuggling assistance, okay? Least we can do. Now if you'll excuse me, I gotta fit a man a pair of concrete shoes."

The Complications

It is true that the Cool Glitch went off the radar all of a sudden, and that some friends are worried. The Johnson, however, isn't. He's actually a low-ranking manager working for Regulus JI. Recently a project he was responsible for got targeted by a shadowrunner team, who stole the prototype. And a recent artwork piece of the Cool Glitch involved a device that rather resembled the prototype.   When the team finds their target, she'll be incredibly confused by their presence. It doesn't take long for hints to drop that not everything is as it seems. And then, of course, a corporate hitsquad comes knocking nearby. Now the runners have to make a run for it. And if they're smart, they take the Cool Glitch with them, otherwise the Dutch Penose will assume the runners were up to no good.

The Aftermath

If the runners save their target, by either taking down or avoiding the hitsquad, they may not get payment but they'll be making some friends. See, the Dutch Penose have a clear social contract with Regulus and they do not take kindly at a corporate hitsquad targeting their territory. Their gratitude comes in the form of possible favours, rather than cold, hard credsticks.   It doesn't take long for Mr. Johnson to get some swimming lessons. With concrete boots on. And the full approval of his own boss, who also disapproved of his actions. What made matters worse, is that the Cool Glitch's art piece didn't even use the prototype, it just looked like it. All that hassle for nothing. With a hitsquad sent in without cause, no surprise his boss turned against him.

I'll make sure to remember that title in case there's ever a sequel.
