During the
Age of Darkness,
Dragonborn were often viewed by others as an extension of their blood ancestors - especially by the
Shadar-Kai and
Elves who felt the effects of the
Spellplague so heavily. This mistrust and question of loyalty to the mortal races was almost single-handedly silenced by the acts of one
Dragonborn, the First Knight of the
Valedori Empire, Damascus Ray.
Trusted friend and protector of
King Caspian Valero, the King’s trust in Damascus was controversial at the time - though it was answered again and again by Damascus Ray’s proof of skill and honor. With his actions, he has become a symbol of patriotism and martial service that has pervaded the culture of
Dragonborn who live in the Imperial Fractals today.
FOUNDING THE ORDER OF DRAGOONS
As one of the primary defenders of the first
Skyship,
The Dawnbreaker, Damascus Ray developed a unique new fighting style that utilized a variety of polearms and combat across vast elevation differences that became necessary in the
War of Thorns and the coming age dominated by
Skyship combat. This fighting style became the basis of the most elite warriors of the
Imperial Army - the Order of
Dragoons, led by Damascus himself. The tactics he developed and his battle prowess is often credited for the death of many
Vampire Lords of the time and the eventual victory of the
Valedori Empire.
These fighters carry on his legacy to this day in service of the
Valedori Empire, even down to the metal used in their specially designed armor greaves - a blend of black and gray marbling that matches the colors of his scales, called Damascus Steel.
