Nyxiliam Fungus

What is the leading cause of death in your world?
The Nyxiliam Fungus is an expansive and fast growing fungus leading to a large number of deaths within the Azareh region. Treatments for the fungal growth are unknown. Any researchers looking to investigate have fallen victim to the fast acting toxins of the mucus secreted by the mushrooms. The disease created by the toxins when breathed in will begin to rot the brain of anyone unfortunate enough to come within a few hundred feet of the mucus. A brain has been known to melt in under a minute. Once the brain matter of the specimen has rotted enough, the corpse will lay dormant on the ground for 5-15 minutes laying completely still. After the time has elapsed, this once sentient humanoid will stand and begin to shamble. This agent is so far tested to be uncooperative and incommunicable, looking only for sources of food which seem to be anything with flesh and blood ranging from wildlife to cannibalism. The new agent will begin to grow fungus from its pours, therefore spreading the epidemic even further. The current state of the Nyxiliam is contained within Azareh, however, it exists in mass quantity and has spread greatly within the Antanaska region. The numbers to how many have died from the mushrooms is unknown, however with no solution in sight, the plague is still at large and more continue to die.
A lich by the name of Azrobah claims to have created the disease shortly after the end of the War of the Seven Kingdoms. Emerging from the frozen wastes, armies were presented to the material plane from the underdark and now spread their chaos throughout the land.
