New Venice
New Venice is an area in the northern part of the former Punggol community. During the melting of the East Antarctic Icesheet in the 2030's, sea levels around the world rose by unprecedented levels. While much of Singapore had been engineered to be resilient against the rising waves, an urban expansion project in northern Punggol coincided with several major melt events, resulting in the extensive flooding of ground level and underground areas. While the New Venice public works projects were started to address the damage, they were largely left incomplete due a lack of support.
Today, many lower class families and citizens of ill repute have moved into New Venice, forming insular and secretive enclaves that shun outsiders. The flooded roads provide water access to the area. It is rumored that, if you know who to talk to, smuggling and illegal salvage can be found for the right price in these parts.
