Marina Bay

The Marina Bay area typically refers to the area encompassed by the Marina Bay Dome, which includes the bay itself, Gardens by the Bay, the Downtown Core, Marina Bay East, and parts of Kallang. This area represents the financial heartland of Singapore, and houses much of the city's commercial and economic powerhouses.

The Marina Bay Dome

The Marina Bay Dome is a planned complex that will encase all of the downtown core of Singapore. At over 4km in diameter, the dome will be the largest terrestrial dome to be constructed by humans upon its completion. The dome will be climate controlled via Confederated Boeing thermal exchange units and Hyflux condensers, which keep the ambient ground level temperature to 27C during the day. Filtration equipment will also reduce airborne particulates significantly.   The Marina Bay Dome is currently under construction. The ground level perimeter facilities have been assembled, forming an effective wall around the Marina Bay area, but a number of delays have affect the completion of the upper parts of the dome, further exacerbated by Boeing's preoccupation with the Tian Dao Space Elevator project in Tuas.

Architecture

At the ground level, the perimeter of the Marina Bay Dome is a glass-and-steel wall that integrates much of the existing architecture of the city. Pedestrian accessible walkways incorporate automated doors that reduce circulation of climate controlled atmosphere to the outside area. Vehicle roadways have been redirected underground (such as stretches of MCE) or incorporate "air wall" ventilation systems that reduce climate loss. The upper part of the dome will be constructed of lightweight inflatable transparent panels, tessellated in pentagonal and hexagonal patterns.

History

The dome is currently under constructed. Much of the ground level perimeter is already in place, and the climate control equipment lowers the temperature of the enclosed area by up to 3C during the day. The dome panels and scaffolding are still being put into place, so the area remains "unroofed". The Marina Bay Dome airspace is a strictly no-fly zone for drones over 3 m in wingspan, and all crewed aircraft (permits exempted).
