The berserkers are the male counterpart of the Valkyries; brutal warriors who thirst for blind bloodshed without grace or finesse. They are blessed by Godwyn to make them extremely effective in war, and Bālavaun was born with such a raw and primal blessing curse. When Bālavaun gives in to the Berserker he loses all self-control and becomes more beast than man. He fights savagely for the sake of fighting, and his bloodlust never ends until all enemies have been utterly defeated. This was a dormant trait inherited from his mother Ileen whose father served as a berserker.

Bālavaun was the son of Bāljiin Valentine and Ileen Cyngotteti, two Witches who conceived of their son in Vanaheim. Bālavaun learned the ways of Witchcraft well from his Coven and soon walked the way of the Witchblade, warrior Knights were sworn to defend the High Vanir with honor and valor. However, Bālavaun lost control of his rage once in battle and was deemed dishonorable, and expelled from the Witchblade Brotherhood. This seems to have had little to no bearing on his life and the path of the warrior he walked proudly.

The Beast of Black-Water

During the Great War in Heaven, the Realm Bahiaron was the site of a Dtundtalli emergence; massive space whales who moved about the stars eating gas giants. Their roars shook the heavens and cracked the surface of Bahiaron. They were summoned by a Conjurer (Jorgie McPherson) to defend the Realm from an advance by The Holy Order. Bālavaun, little more than an arrogant youth at the time, intervened. The warrior was not driven by valor or a code but by the desire to dominate and subjugate.

The blood of a Dtundtalli is like oil; black, murky, and dense, and the Realm of Bahiaron was primarily composed of water. These two factors did not mix well when Bālavaun slaughtered the Dtundtalli herd, spilling their blood into the vast oceans of Bahiaron, hence the Realm's nickname "Blackwater". Bālavaun was opposed by the Conjurer Jorgie on the shores of Bai for the ruination of her kingdom. She had erred and thought her majiks superior to Bālavaun. She paid for this arrogance with her life. There on the shores of Bai, covered in tar-black blood, Bālavaun slaughtered Jorgie, with her Guard bearing witness.

The Heavenly Host pushed their advance on the heartland of Bahiaron, but they too encountered Bālavaun in the midst of a Berserkers rage. The Arcane Lord cross blades with the Holy Knight Ost'Avaun. The good knight and his battalion fell, but Bālavaun was severely wounded, weakened enough for the remaining Host to subdue and capture the monster. This was recorded as the battle of Blackwater, and Bālavaun was named the 'Beast of Blackwater'.

Rosanhi bore five children for Bālavaun and with them later conquered the Realm Bahiaron, the site of the Blackwater Battle.
