Reptilians

Reptilians are the oldest and most diverse of the mortal races, although they come in so many shapes and sizes that many consider there to be multiple difference species. This, however, is a misconception owed to their highly mutable genetic material. Magic users and scientists can easily alter the genetics of eggs after they are laid, a practice that is widespread among reptillian races, seen as a way to adapt and survive in any conditions.   Scholars are unclear about the origin of the Reptilian race, but a very modern and widely accepted theory is that they were created by ancient dragons during their struggles against the primordial Elves. However, detractors point out that it is widely accepted that dragons created the kobold lineage of reptilians and wonder why the dragons wouldn't have started with a servant race in the first place.   In general, reptilians are unsentimental to an extreme. To them, anything that increases their survival is not only acceptable, but laudable. They are powerful shamans, drawing strength directly from the spirit of the earth.

Lineages

Lizardfolk

Lizardfolk is a broad term, but generally refers to the long-lived reptilians who require long hibernation periods in their lifecycle. Generally, lizardfolk require about one year in hibernation for every ten active, with younger require less hibernation. They essentially cease aging while hibernating, though, leading some to choose to hibernate longer, extending their lives by spending huge amounts of it dormant. Lizardfolks comes in all shapes and sizes, from small, nimble shapes resembling geckos, to hulking forms resembling crocodiles. Some even have the shell of turtles. Lizardfolk are adolescent at about 15 when they required their first hibernation, adults at about 30, after completing their second hibernation. Lizardfolk are elderly after about 500 waking years, with most dying peacefully during hibernations after that.

Kobolds

Kobolds are by far the most numerous and widely spread of the reptilians. They were created in ancient times by dragons, who conquered and enslaved primieval reptilians and conducted rituals to make their descendants smaller and easier to dominate, and remove their need for long periods of hibernation. Doing so, however, cost the kobolds their long life. They are adolescent at about 15, adults at about 20, and elderly at 100. It is very rare to see an elderly kobold, though, as the ancient dragons also removed a lot of their sense of self-preservation.

Ophidians

Ophidian is the most common name for the snake-like reptilians. They are well adapted to deserts, requiring very little water to survive. However, the constant requirement to follow the water meant that they had to sacrifice their hibernation periods, and so have lifespans very similar to kobolds. However, because they are free of dragons and have a life rhythm more similar to humans, they are far more common in cosmopolitan areas. They are the only reptilian race where hybrids with other humanoid races are not unheard of.

Dragonform

Dragonforms, sometimes erroneously called half-dragons or dragonborn, are descendants of reptilians who worshipped draconic titans and great wyrms. They practiced the most severe of the mutative magicks in their "pursuit of perfection." Most dragons find them to be mockeries and often lash out, with even goodly dragons preferring to avoid them. They are incredibly rare, as the elemental forces bound inside each destroy most eggs before they hatch. Luckily, this is offset by their long lives. The elemental powers remove the need for long hibernation and render it near-impossible, so they are generally unable to extend their lives like lizardfolk. Also, rather than becoming elderly at 500 years, it happens closer to 300. Otherwise, they age similarly to lizardfolk.

Primieval

Primieval reptilians came in a much broader assortment of shapes, including some that could fly. They are functionally extinct in modern times, though.
