Opposition Character in Seori | World Anvil

Opposition

Opposition is the Ascendant of Ambition and Inevitability. They are unique among ascendants due to their absolute stance on neutrality. Most other Ascendants view Opposition as an outside force, a constant threat, and a great inconvenience. This is because of Opposition's self appointed duty of keeping the other Ascendants in their places. Any other of the great powers in the world that experiences great success can find themselves suddenly facing great resistance, and even massive losses. Various alleged avatars of Opposition have attributed these actions to preserving balance and order, but even other Ascendants dedicated to balance have come under attack by Opposition, leading to much confusion among Ascendants and mortals alike. These account are dubious, however, as none were ever definitively confirmed to be an Ascendant.   Opposition is notoriously secretive. No other Ascendant is aware of the true identity of the avatar of Opposition, and only a handful of mortals know at any given time. What is known is that Opposition maintains a monastery at their point of power, a foreboding mountain peak. Visitors are infrequent, but welcomed, as the monks declare that any who reach the monastery have faced great hardship and thus are worthy of learning the wisdom of Opposition. It is assumed that the avatar of Opposition resides in the monastery, but this has never been confirmed.

Holy Books & Codes

The various cults and temples of Opposition that spring up and fall apart around the world rarely interact, and thus the manifestos of each vary from place to place. There are, however, common themes among them, especially of balance and resistance. Of particular note is the phrase "resist, my brother" appears in the vast majority of collected Oppositional literature.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

There are few worshippers of Opposition, and fewer places of worship. Symbolism varies greatly from place to place, as most cults develop independently of each other. A few shared emblems are the hammer and anvil, shield and arrow, burning tree, and a square inscirbe in a circle inscribed in square.

Tenets of Faith

People who actively worship Opposition are few and far between, but are not unheard of. Stories abound of mysterious strangers drifting through towns, hermits emerging from forests, and weird recluses suddenly emerging. Such tales are often understood as folklore, but with deep undertones of suspicion towards strangers and hesitance to share bounty. In most stories, the stranger visits a town during a period of particularly good times. Within days of the strangers departure, the good times end, and periods of misery follow. Death, disease, violence, and fowl magic are common elements to the stories.   Interestingly, the stories are not far from the truth, for those who truly follow Opposition often see themselves as "equalizers" and often take that to mean they should make bad times out of good ones. However, much less told are the stories of the followers of Opposition making good times out of bad. Great acts of charity and kindness are just as common as those of great cruelty from the followers.   The few actual priests of Opposition look down on the more common cultists and their acts of equalization. Those who have truly contacted Opposition know that its main concern is to provide opposition to the other Ascendants, and cares nothing for the actions of a few strangers and hermits.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

For every action, there is an opposed reaction. This fundamental law of nature binds all things: animal, vegetable, mineral, and gods. Opposition is the enforcer of this particular law, including onto fellow ascendants and even true gods.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Opposition is the magical embodiment of the natural law that all actions are met with opposing reactions. While natural laws can constrain mortals, more powerful beings such as other Ascendants often view themselves as above such things as laws. The full might of Opposition is brought against those who go too far without resistance.
