Boloxol Mage's Guild

The Boloxol Mage's Guild is the unchallenged center of magical authority in Boloxol. It enjoys a great deal of political autonomy, thanks to a long standing treaty with the prince that grants political favor in exchange for the mage's guilds cooperation and assitance in enforcing the magical laws of the city. A later treaty granted the Guild the power to write the magical laws of Boloxol.   The primary public duty of the Guild is to police the rampant use of magic in the city, especially the common use of necromancy to produce cheap laborers. Enforcement is generally carried out by members of the lowest two Circles of the guild's oragnization. Casualty rates are high among initiates, mainly due to engagements with non-guilded practioners whose skill surpass the poorly-trained recruits.   Those who advance up the ranks have truly demonstrated impressive skills, earning them much respect, and often fear, from the community. Mages of the highest Circles are often considered peers of the various lords, crime bosses, and guild masters, and always considered the most dangerous of the lot. Members of the ruling Council of Seven are functionally royalty in Boloxol, although they are often times secretive and paranoid to an extreme, making any open dealings with them rare indeed.

Structure

The Boloxol Mage's Guild is strictly hierarchical. Members are divided into nine circles, from the initiates of the First Circle, to the masters of the Ninth. Above the Ninth is the Council of Seven, the group of seven archmages who set the rules and standards of the guild, binding all members, including themselves. Members of the Council often keep their Council identities secret, but it is not uncommon for others to sit on the council openly. It is notable that a member of the Council of Seven is not required to be a member of the Ninth Circle, although mainly due to the secretive nature of Council members, it is publically unknown if any example exist of council members who were not of the Ninth Circle.

Culture

The Boloxol Mage's Guild is cutthroat by both Boloxol standards and mage's guild standards. It is unique in being one of the few mage's guild in Seori that accepts and trains initiates free of charge, even those with no prior magical experience. Survival rates can be as low as 25%, meaning that only the truly desperate, deranged, or confident ever apply. All of which are qualities that the Boloxol Mage's Guild values in its lowest levels.   At higher levels, only those who are truly talented have survived, so there is a healthy working respect for each other, especially between members of the same cohort who have reached the same Circle. Alliances between opposing groups such as these are the primary cause of fatalities among the ranks of the higher levels of guild society.

Public Agenda

The Boloxol Mage's Guild seeks to enforce the laws of Boloxol on its local practioners of magic, and to enforce its own standards and practices onto any it can. The guild also provides resources to its members and select members of the public engaged in magical or otherwise cryptic lore.

Assets

The Guild is one of the richest entities in Boloxol, second only to the Prince. Its assets are vast, comprising huge land holdings, vast repositories of knowledge, magical devices of all sorts, and treasures that make dragons envious.   The most mysterious asset of the Guild is known only as "The Thing". Only members of the Council of Seven are permitted to see The Thing, and, as part of the spell required to gain access to the most magically protected place in Seori, are unable to speak a single word about what they saw without falling dead. Rumors abound amongst the public about what The Thing may be, but it is generally agreed that , whatever it is, The Thing is somehow tied to the true purpose of the Guild.

Magic is power is magic.
