Dustshroud Hyena Species in Seiðrheim | World Anvil

Dustshroud Hyena

In the shifting sands of the desert The Sundered Wastes lives the feared Dustshroud Hyena. Despite the harsh and seemingly inhospitable environment, these creatures have adapted to it developing new survival techniques.   Named for their ability to blend seamlessly with the desert landscape, the Dustshroud Hyena is quote different from its common cousins. Their coats of patchwork sandy hues help to give them their blended camoflauge in the desert. You might be lucky enough to see one crest a dune only to have it disappear into the endless sands.   The Dustshroud Hyena is smaller than any of the similar species allowing them to require less nutrients in the starved deserts and also helping them to navigate the terrain more easily. They are renowned for their ability to withstand the extreme tempurature changes of the desert as well as being able to survive on minimal water, getting most of the water from their prey.   The Hyenas form large packs to hunt down bigger prey allowing the whole pack to benefit more than they would individually. They have evolved a unique hunting technique that fully utilizes their desert environment to their advantage. When hunting larger prey they move rapidly and erratically kicking up a dust storm to obscure the size of the pack and exact location, this allows them to slowly surround their prey and while it is disoriented strike from the shroud of the dust storm using it for offence and defense. This hunting strategy makes for a very efficient victory rarely losing any packmates in the process.   Due to the dangers of these hyenas hunting in packs, The Tower Sentinels make sure to be on extra caution when crossing through The Sundered Wastes and take the shortest route possible to try and avoid conflict.
