Glain

Beast Hunter Glain Rykie Wooler

Glain is a self-asserted Monster Hunter that sees her fate in the occupation as one better suited due to the very nature that she is herself, half a 'monster'. She was born close to Yusephire village, raised and discovered to be a half-child that owed part of her genetics to the beastly terror of their local dragon, Rykyleinta (Rye-key-lee-en-tah). The likely father, a brash human knight assumed dead by the very same beast after claiming to go and attempt to slay the dragon. Glain's very name was not one given at immediate birth, but rather comes from her human uncle, considering her a 'jewel' by the golden eyes she possessed as even an infant. She was educated on how to defend herself, and fascinated early on by fables and legends, and went out to pursue them after she had enough of her homebound bullies and torment as the only village halfling.   Now she travels across the lands, partially disguised to avoid quick prejudice, but revealing it often when it persuades her to be hired. She juggles between power struggles, prejudice, curses, and plights on a near regular basis, and each adventure begins with the world better coming to know her as Glain the monster slaying half-monster. With so much still left to do, she contains the role of her own plotline and flows through many stories in the Seeds of Chaos universe.   Glain remains a more cold and calculated person, if with a heart that tries to help others in ways she wish for her own upbringing and assistance. The 'spirit of her uncle' as she sometimes refers to it, she wishes to make the world a better place for all, by means of killing the true monsters, and yet proving that monster genetics aren't inherently bad. She refuses to kill a beastly creature for merely exiting, but will quickly investigate any reported trouble, ranging from tyrannical dragons and cursed nobles, to mere wounded sheep on a remote farm. She speaks little to those she doesn't know, and often only begins to open up when relaying information crucial to survival, or her own personal goals.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Glain often carries a petite frame, but holds a decent amount of strength. While far from the brute, or even underneath the muscle of an average male fighter, she retains a sense of balanced strength and endurance. She often chooses lighter armor and slash-to-stab style melee weaponry, and believes herself to be quick on the feet, and fast to draw necessary items for aid. Often where agility and precision isn't suited, she has a swift resourcefulness that pulls her through the fight, be it poisoned sword oils, or a pocket of sparkstone. She's also used to long walks from her travels, and frugal about spending coin on beasts of burden. Her draconic side lets her endure fire, infection, and even some magic assaults better than a pure-blooded human.

Identifying Characteristics

  • Crimson cloak/robe is often worn, with a hood, and going past the waist while not often making it to knee-length.
  • A wooden mask covering the front of her face, with two holes for her eyes.
  • Glowing yellow eyes, not often well hidden by the mentioned above.
  • Custom boots made for her claw feet. Claims the back-claws that hang out are decorative.
  • To see her in more exposed flesh, her green scales along patches of her body. She has faint trace of scales along her forehead, covering most of her arms and legs, a long green tail, and deep back scars where wings were originally supposed to grow. Claws protrude from the fingers and feet. Most of her torso, head, facial bones, upper-arms, and thighs retain pale akrinian human flesh. Contrary to most half-dragons, she entirely lacks the horns, with not even a lump on her head.

Mental characteristics

Education

Most of her education was through her adoptive uncle (likely biological, but technically its not too certain). She learned from several basic books, studied maps and loose cartography, and was fascinated early with fables and legends, most concerning monsters. Due to some early bullying, she was also taught how to defend herself, mostly through swords, knives, and blunt tools. Additionally, she dabbled in minor tea foraging, and herbal medicine.   Further adult education came from experience and adventures. She quickly sought the root to fables she was endeared to, and read in libraries and temples in different places of Basillua, as well as speaking to other outcasts and oddballs. She's built up a vast idea of different monsters, demonology, and even some magic enhancements, but still yearns to know how to better cast magic herself.

Mental Trauma

Her heritage remains a sensitive subject in her life. She is disgusted by speak of her human father, and strays from any side of him, further annoyed and frustrated by memories of his extended family. However, her mother is more difficult, being a "monster" she feels obligated to hunt and kill. Further deepened is the wound that her mother tore her wings at infancy, and she feels a sense of incompleteness without them, even if she otherwise hides her mother's side. Still as the only parent left, she isn't able to face her mother in the same way she sees herself accomplishing. This occasionally ties into confusion of her own identity, unsure if she's more human or dragon, and questioning herself frequently.

Morality & Philosophy

Glain is perhaps at her best, left undisturbed in social circumstances, but not a bad person at heart. She wishes to use her best abilities to put down corruption and smaller problem threats. Her reasoning sometimes shifts on the moment, sometimes wishing to prove herself capable, and other times a glimpse of optimism promises her that if the world is free of bad monsters, that good monsters can live in harmony. Regardless, she won't harm false threats, and is slow and reserved to assess her goals and potential conflicts to make sure she won't take an innocent life. As a halfling, she understands the concept of innocent people, just as much as she doesn't underestimate social cruelty. She will even occasionally side with a monster's idea or selfish pursuit, if she comes to find their reasoning or justification to be decent enough. She finds human issues to be something hardwired in an ever shifting climate, and less thing she can fix, and often doesn't get involved in political problems without being dragged into it, or finding its tangled in her slayer quest.   Unfortunately, it often turns out that like her bloodline, monsters and humans can closely connect and cross into paths that fuel her occupation, and she won't hesitate to withdraw any mercy as long as she finds she has the proof necessary, burning any bridges that requires. Glain is a quick and efficient killer, and has replaced any early onset shyness or social issues with eager ambition. Any small talk may often end abruptly, and was rarely started by her, often with her ideal circumstance to only obtain resources from her talk. However engaging in threats has trained her to have a wry and disarming wit, occasionally attempting to disarm some by words alone when necessary. Regardless of her quiet demeanor, she will happily ramble on more educational feats, and enjoys sharing small wisdom or insights regarding her job, regions, or materials, and in a way can inspire an uncharacteristically social mentor aspect. Regardless, she wishes to work alone in most circumstances, only requiring assistance where necessary.

Social

Family Ties

Uncle Owain Wooler: Uncle Owain was allegedly the more quiet and learned brother of the family. While his older brother felt entitled to power, Owain took to the old family craft in meek farmlife, but collected books and treasured reading and story tales above most of his family's past. This came in handy, for when he met and even named Glain, he alone took care of her while the ignorance of the extended family shamed and disowned her. Its possible by a slim chance that Uncle Owain was never actually her uncle, and the spoken knight never her father, but the possibility and faint resemblance is all too present. Owain remains one of the few compassionate people Glain knows well, but also a further bolstering mark to her cold demeanor for she challenged herself to stop caring when she left him to prove her worth.   Rykyleinta: Dragon of Yusephire, Rykyleinta was the green menace that terrorized a small village region. Glain didn't meet much with her own mother in early life, and if her uncle was to be believed, the dragoness wanted her thrown back out into the world, or taken by wolves. Glain's relationship would go on to be complicated to say the least. Her mother had torn her wings off as an infant, but still manages to live and recall such a time. Boasting of her treasures, worth, and status, her mother is a strange tyrant that Glain is still forced to thank for her existence, and yet hate for lessening it. Glain doesn't know how, but she wishes to one day kill Rykyleinta as the ultimate testimate to her skill and ability as a halfling better than either of her inherited sides.   Sean Wooler: Sean was a knight and father that Glain never knew... save for stories. Awful stories. Rumors and words of him abusing women, bullying farmers, and talking brave while doing nothing for the villages problems. He was supposed to be the lead protector for the village under a foreign king's authority, but Glain only knew him as the father that was consumed by her own mother, and later her existence was deemed unworthy by those loyal to Sean in the family. She imagines her father was everything wrong with humanity.

Religious Views

Glain doesn't refuse any form of god, for she takes every word of one as serious in their potential to effect her life. However she chooses no patron in any, and mostly sees their abilities as one to meddle in the balance of to keep in harmony. As a resident of Basillua, she mostly concerns herself with the pantheon that runs just under a dozen, but is more concerned whenever she hears of a new entity or being that could manifest to do harm.
