Ioun Stones
Ioun Stones are powerful magic items used primarily by their creators, who are universally potent magic users. While most magic items are merely enhanced by the mystic arts, notable examples are widespread of intelligent items, possessed of a mind that can interact with its host. Ioun Stones however are unique, and many scholars have debated long and hard over the strange property of life and soul the stones possess. The only facts that declassify these stones as living beings in their own right is their appearance (as gemstones) and the creation process, which involves the invoking of a distinct magical force into a hollow stone.
Ioun Stones demonstrate characteristics of a symbiotic relationship with their host, bestowing a special ability designated by the look of the stone itself (consult the charts) in exchange for taking in the tide of magical energy that permeates their magic using host. Each stone type has its own personality, desires, and needs, similar to other sentient magic items, and need to be treated well and cared for lest they die and go hollow.
