Rhades

Geography and Description

Rhades is a support settlement for Port Karn, supplying vital agricultural products to help feed the large city.   It was recently troubled by a wraith, a creature let loose when the residents discovered a guano mine.   Rhades is about a long day’s walk from Port Karn, to the southwest of the city. It’s the county seat of Sharpe County, and Count Alistaire Rhades has his manor house near there, just north of town. It wasn’t a large town, just a main road going through the center of town, with side roads sprouting off of it, leading to residences. At the center of town was the town square, which was where the market was held on market days. About two thirds of the population was Orcish, about a fifth was Human, a tenth seemed to be Goblin, and everyone else was barely represented. Rhades is mostly Orcs. 65% of the population. 20% is human, 10% is Goblin, 2% Hobbit, 2% Dwarf, 1% Elf. And, despite being daytime, many of the workers they had seen in the fields were Orcs, so they knew there were a lot more that hadn’t gone on shift yet. The ones they saw working in the sun were likely the ones that got unlucky when the working shifts were assigned. In most areas, the Orcs rotated the work shifts regularly, to provide at least some relief from the damaging aspects of the sun.   Count Sharpe’s colors are black and gold; the guardsmen wear gambesons quartered in those colors. Their shields show Baronet Felson Undrite’s colors: dark red and buff, with a black rooster in the upper right corner. One of the guards is named Hamish.   Map

Notable Locations

Hyram Coulter was an old man who lived in a tent by the river. Being somewhat antisocial, he’d been accused of being a warlock who was stealing the breath of babies, and lynched for it.   Alchemist in town: Hakna Bonesorrow   Inn: Blue Violet Inn, two story structure with a paved courtyard, with benches and planter boxes filled with colorful tropical plants and bluish-colored violets. The interior is lit by oil lamps. The inn has an integral stable.
Tavern: The Cracked Keg. Dim, lit by oil lamps, one set on each table, and they provided most of the light. Hanging from the ceiling was a large, wheel-shaped chandelier, with thirty tallow candles on it. It provided a measure of ambient lighting. The place smelled like meat due to the burning tallow. The tavern was set up with rows of tables and benches. Tavern keeper is human; at least one barmaid is an Orc.
Tavern keeper of the Cracked Keg   Kura Ashgalar: midwife Her house is west two streets and north about halfway up the block from the tavern. She had a wattle and daub house with a wood shingle roof, single story, but the slope of the roof implied a possible storage space.
Kura Ashgalar   Her house wasn’t big; a main room, with a pair of bedrooms and a small privy. Her furnishings were plain, except for some minimally carved scrollwork on the arms and legs, but well made. She has a husband, Rend. The great room took up about two thirds of the structure; the two bedrooms were on one side, with a narrow privy between them. They could see a window and a door on the back wall, leading out to the back yard. There was a little plot of land, furrowed, with rows of plants growing in the back yard. Most were herbs.   Froguk and Sons: warehouse in town, specializing in agricultural storage (both grains and equipment).   Eliana Aelbright (fortune teller; palmistry and seances) The sign is a hand, palm out, with a pentagram behind it. “Palms read and fortunes told!” it reads in text painted on the sign in neat letters. The house is like many of the others in town, wattle and daub, whitewashed, with a thatch roof. There is a porch and a wood plank door. Eliana is a middle aged woman wearing colorful clothes and chunky, ostentatious gold jewelry. She is attractive, with some extra padding that seems to suit her. She has a smile that is infectious. She charges $12 for a palm reading, $90 for a seance (when she is willing to do one; she finds them difficult and uncomfortable).
Her house is very much like other peasant houses, with a large room taking up most of the interior space, with a pair of small bedrooms and a privy. Not far from the door is a circular table with four chairs around it, covered with a dark blue tablecloth with lilac-colored embroidery around the edges. A pewter platter with an arrangement of candles sits at the center of the table. When she does a seance, she drinks an iridescent potion and flicks some variegated dust onto the lit candles. The potion helps her to reach the spirit realm (an expanse of magentas, purples, and blacks, with the occasional flash of blue, pink, or red. The space around boils like fast moving clouds, lit by occasional lightning flashes. Most often, a pathway, softly glowing and lighter in shade than the surrounding environment, is visible; it supposedly leads to whatever you are searching for. It stretches off, fading into the cloudy, foggy distance. The whole space sparkles, much like sand under a shifting light source.)   Hamlet of Felgrat Grom: It was a large house, with an attached barn that was large enough for a cart and two horses, although only one horse was in the barn. The other stall was empty, and looks like it had been for a while. The house and barn were made of wooden planks, with a wood shingle roof. The whole thing was painted a faded red, with whitewashed trim. Oil lamps were lit in the rooms, the light visible through the oiled paper windows.   The local nobles are Count Alistaire “Razor” Sharpe of Rhades, and Baronet Felson Undrite. C Alistaire "Razor" Sharpe of Rhades 5'7", 160 lbs, brown hair, brown eyes, attractive. ST 12, DX 12, IQ 14, HT 11, 50 yrs old (but looks about 40), married to a very attractive woman named Veronia, who has given him four fine children aged 25M (killed in a war three years ago), 22F, 18F, and 15M. While he has two daughters that could fit this description, neither of them have ever been interested in any local boys; both have been betrothed to nobility since they were about 8 years old.   Rhades Manor This is the ancestral home of Count Alistaire Rhades. He still lives here part time, although he spends a lot of time in his town house in Port Karn, where most of the politics happens. A graveled road leads from Rhades to his gates. His manor sits on a small rise, looking over the confluence of two streams and the pond they create. It is surrounded by colorful native jungle. There is a small boat house on the pond, with a pair of rowboats and a canoe in it. There is a stone wall that extends from one stream to the other, in an arc at about where the farmed fields are. The gate opens upon a double row of trees, almond, walnut, and hazelnut. Behind the house is a small orchard of avocado, mango, peach, fig, and date trees. The grounds around it are a mixture of flower gardens and herbs, with a few vegetables planted in the kitchen gardens.
He has a full staff at the house, including security, in his livery, which is gold on sable. They are very proper guards, armed with partisans. They can get halberds or poleaxes at need, if penetration becomes more important than a big sword on a long lever arm.
Bt Felson Undrite Human M ST 12 DX 11 IQ 11 HT 10 Age 51 5’6”, 187lbs sandy hair, worn as a mullet. Attractive, despite the mullet (which somehow works on him, miraculously), he has a scar under his left eye from a knife slash, which he received in a bar fight when he was young. He is a competent administrator, which helped when he approached Count Sharpe to get his nobility. He has great business acumen, and started out as an accountant doing the books for several different trading guilds. Before that, he had served in the army as a logistics officer for a half dozen years. He is on his third wife; the first ended in a horse riding accident; the second in a divorce. His current wife’s name is Bella (daughter of Helena Vargame), and he has no living children. His first wife died before she could bear him any children, and the second one was barren (that was NOT the reason he divorced her, though). Bella is currently pregnant for the fourth time; the first three attempts ended in miscarriage. They are hopeful the fourth time will be the charm. His seneschal is named Christopher the Reeve. Undrite's manor's entry foyer is high ceilinged, with plaster walls that are painted in mostly abstract murals. A pair of curving staircases rise up to a mezzanine level that overlooks the foyer. Closed doors lead off to other rooms or hallways. Skylights let in the midday sun, illuminating the room with a bright glow. There are a pair of nicely carved side tables, one on each side. Each has candelabra on them.
Rhades is a town of some 2000 people. It’s big enough to warrant a market, and has a smithy, chandlery, bakery, general store, two pubs, and an inn with stables. There are also several warehouses for food storage, mostly dry goods, but one has fresh vegetables and fruits awaiting shipment elsewhere. There are also several grain silos in town, supporting the surrounding area.

Most of the buildings in town are houses for the large number of farmworkers that are needed in the area. Many are apartments, and some are almost like barracks or communal housing. Much of the workforce are serfs, in liege to Baronet Undrite, whose barony this area is a part of (see Site 20, below, for Undrite Manor).       There is a fortune teller in town. She can do a seance to try to get in contact with someone who knows about the situation. She will be able to find an Orc Shaman from 30 generations ago.

Eliana Aelbright ST 9 DX 10 IQ 11 HT 10 Overweight, chubby, attractive, charming (Charisma 2) She can do palm readings and seances; the town knows her as a mostly well-meaning diviner of the future. She is good at reading people, and the townies (and tourists) seem to like her “fortunes” (Cost: $12 for a palm reading). But her real strength is her seances, which she doesn’t do often (they are rather expensive at $90 each) where she communes with spirits. She has Summon Spirit-13, and Death Vision-13. These are folk magic versions of the spells, and sometimes they scare her. So she doesn’t do them too often.

She works out of her home; it’s on a side street off the main avenue through town. A sign in her window shows a hand, palm out, with a pentagram in the background. “Palms read and fortunes told!” says text under the sign.

General Store: basically, a glorified trading post. Not terribly large, and doesn’t have the greatest selection of goods. But it has the things that a farming town needs: clothing, housewares, tools, hunting and fishing gear, and the like. Including oilcloth waders, in a collection of sizes that matches the general population of the area.

  At the Guano Mine:
The mine is a rift-like sink hole that leads to an extensive cavern complex, now inhabited by bats. The guano is an average 1.2m deep, with some areas much deeper. There is a second opening into the caves, but it’s small, and hidden by brush. There are some arrows, drawn in chalk, near many of the tunnel openings, pointing (mostly) towards the opening. The town has set up a ladder to access the caves, and a winch tower to haul the buckets of guano out, to be loaded into wheelbarrows, and hence to wagons. Once a wagon is filled, it’s sent to its destination (mostly local fields, but some is shipped a bit farther out).

Typically, 2 people are down in the mine, filling the bucket; two people up top work the winch, and a third takes the wheelbarrow and runs it up a ramp into the wagon. They wear herbed masks over their noses and mouths, and waders. It’s a smelly, dirty job. There is a water barrel on site for cleaning up. Some of the workers: Bedros (human male, tall, black hair that falls to his shoulders, brown eyes), Jowan, Melita (human woman, in her 20s, shoulder length brown hair, stocky of build with muscled arms Grala and Orgrim. Brennus, Yoshiik, Dirk; Zolzug and Kargath. Dugbûrz, Merten, Burzum; Drakthar and Zorrana.

  8. Hamlet of Mirana (“Good River”). There are six structures in this hamlet, housing 6 extended families: 14, 12, 10, 15, 16, 8. Their position by the river and straddling a primary road lets them get goods to market rather easily. It also gives them ready access to the distribution services of Rhades. They have two carriage houses, four carts, and two wagons between them. One of the houses has attached stables, with 4 horses. The long, thin field by the river is a pasture containing 8 oxen and 4 milk cows, which they use for plowing, other heavy tasks, and milk/cheese production. 2 of the families are Orc, 2 are Human, 1 is Goblin, 1 is Hobbit.

Ratlûg Bagul (M) ST 14, DX 10, IQ 8, HT 13, is the head of the household, and primary farmer. He is older, in his fifties, but still strong and spry. He has a bushy grey beard, and long salt and pepper hair that he usually ties back in a pony tail. He has scarred hands, mostly from farming accidents (he considers himself lucky that the accidents weren’t fatal), although his scarred knuckles show the results of his temper and a series of bar fights.
Ûkshak, Ratlûg’s wife, is also in her fifties. She runs the household while her husband runs the farming. ST 13, DX 11, IQ 9, HT 14. She and her husband are known for epic arguments, although they do truly love each other, and many of their fights go from wrestling and fisticuffs to wild, passionate sex. A little less often now, but it’s still at least a monthly occurrence.
Skoth, Ratlûg’s eldest son, ST 13, DX 11, IQ 8, HT 13, Age 23. He’s a farmer, like his dad.
Olgoth, Ratlûg’s second son, ST 14, DX 11, IQ 8, HT 14, Age 19. He’s also a farmer, but he’s also the biggest of the kids. He is known in town for his ability to drink, and to fight in bars. While he is quick to anger, he is also known for beating someone up and then befriending them. He doesn’t hold a grudge, and to him, fighting isn’t something done out of hate.
Nákra, daughter, ST 13, DX 12, IQ 10, HT 12, Age 16. Raised as a farmer, but what she really wants to do is be a teamster. She shows aptitude with animal handling, teamster, and driving wagons.
Názkûga Nampat, (F) ST 13, DX 10, IQ 8, HT 13, Age 34. Farmhand, wife of Mormog. Of everyone, she is known for how sharp she gets blades. Blade sharpening seems to be a hobby with her, and she can often be found in the barn, maintaining a keen edge on the tools. She recently lost her baby to the Blue Death.
Mormog, (M) ST 16, DX 11, IQ 9, HT 14, Age 36. Farmhand, married to Názkûga. Huge, standing 7’ 2” tall, and his arm spread is longer than his height, at 7’ 8”. The guy is massive, weighing 390 lbs, and he is built like a power lifter.
Ronk, (M) ST 12, DX 10, IQ 7, HT 13, Age 14. Son of Mormog. Still growing, he is a mostly happy young kid. Although he recently lost his baby sister, so he’s not too happy about that, and dreams of being the one to corner and kill the creature that did it.
Tuka, (F) stats irrelevant, as she is dead, killed by the Blue Death several weeks ago.
Hamish Standing (M) ST 12, DX 11, IQ 11, HT 11, Age 40. Farmhand, Human. Has lived here for almost 20 years, and tends to be the one to try and de-escalate fistfights. His skill at Brawling (16) means that even though he is at a strength disadvantage most of the time, he can still hold his own when the fights get out of hand and his efforts to calm things down go sideways.
Clarrys (F) married to Hamish. ST 12, DX 10, IQ 10, HT 12, Age 41. Farmhand. Her hobby is basketweaving, and many of the containers used are by her manufacture.
Sandy (F) daughter of Hamish. ST 11, DX 12, IQ 10, HT 11. Age 18. Farmhand. Green Thumb, and is in charge of the kitchen garden near the house.

  14. Hamlet of Dharg. Barely even a hamlet, it consists of three houses and a tool shed. A carriage house with room for a cart and a horse are attached to the largest building. During harvest, there are also several tents pitched around the buildings, for the extra workers necessary for harvest. The buildings house 14 in the largest, building, 8 in the second largest, and 7 in the smallest. There are 4 tents pitched, each housing 6 temporary workers. On Warmbreeze 8, the first baby died. On Warmbreeze 15, the second one died (the daughter of one of the migrant worker families).

His Bad Temper comes to the fore whenever he thinks about the Breathstealer, and often must be controlled by his family members.
Chakub (F age 24) ST 12 DX 10 IQ 9 HT 12. She is in grieving for her lost child, and is prone to collapsing in tears because of it.

Nazû (M age 22) ST 17 DX 12 IQ 8 HT 14. An imposing physical specimen. Husband of Zuka. Very protective of Zuka and her extended family. He grew up the only child in a single parent home, so he is very grateful for the large family of his wife.

Ukkil Itak, (Goblin M age 21) ST 10, DX 12, IQ 11, HT 11. Married to Ketidu. They have three children, Kykkif, Jytok, and Aykula.

Aykula (F age 8) ST 9 DX 13, IQ 11, HT 11. Usually works with her mother with the cloth works. Her design skills are really good, better than her mother’s actually (which is both a source of pride and dismay from her mother…Ketidu is really proud of her ability, but there is enough jealousy/envy to make her feel sad that she herself isn’t as good).
Ketarn Littlesmith (Human M age 26) ST 13 DX 11 IQ 11 HT 11. Married to Osubwe. They have no children (yet). Farm hand, and something of a handyman.
Osubwe Littlesmith (nee Oniyango) (F age 23) ST 10 DX 11 IQ 12 HT 11. Immigrant from the Essamine Monarchy, and has been living in the Empire since she was 5. Speaks Harada (native), Imperial (native), Mekiitagi (broken) and Lurkash (broken). She is pale skinned, rather than the usual tan to black skin tone of most people. Like her husband, she is a farm hand.

Tent 1: Bagabug Gruk (Orc M age 23) ST 15 DX 11 IQ 8 HT 12. Married to Goroth. Migrant farm worker. Lost his baby daughter Ragash on Warmbreeze 15 to the Breathstealer, the second victim. Tent 2: Ulgan Kugalûga (Orc F age 32) ST 13 DX 11 IQ 9 HT 12. Migrant farm worker, active member of the PKAC Farmers Guild. She acts as their eyes and ears on the ground, so to speak. So she has an air of suspicion around her that isn’t really justified. Few others know about her position in the guild. If farmers are being abused, she would be the one to send a message about it to PKAC.
Tent 2: Rugorim Turbag (Orc M age 35) ST 14 DX 12 IQ 9 HT 11. Migrant farm worker, good with animals when necessary. Fancies himself an ale connoisseur. It’s not all bluster, he actually knows his stuff, and has worked in a brewery before. If given access to materials and the equipment, he can set up a micro brewery and have pretty good ales in about four eightdays (although it’s better if he goes for six eightdays).
Tent 2: Gnurl Bulak (Orc M age 24) ST 13 DX 11 IQ 8 HT 11. Migrant farm worker.

Tent 2: Radbûg Tumhorn (Orc M age 31) ST 14 DX 11 IQ 9 HT 12. Migrant farm worker, missing an eye. If asked about it, he will give different stories each time (cut out of his head as punishment because he saw a princess naked, cut in a barroom brawl by a broken bottle, scratched out by a flickerbug, parasitic worm infestation, etc).

Heddrak Arba (Orc M age 21) ST 13 DX 12 IQ 8 HT 11. May be in love with Ushak; he’s not sure he’s ready to start his own family yet. He’s never been in love before, and while he says he loves her, in reality, it could just be lust. Farm hand. He’s also not sure how he feels about the death of the twins—bad, because that’s the way he should feel, or good, because he didn’t want kids anyway?
Ghak (Orc M age 17) ST 12 DX 11 IQ 8 HT 11. Farm hand.

Hyram Coulter (Human M age 64) ST 9 DX 10 IQ 10 HT 10. Mean spirited squatter. Didn’t really like people, and lived in a tent on the river’ s bank, not in the house with Armel, Anna, Gwenn, and Katell. Only Katell got along with him. Hyram hated just about everyone else, and wanted to be left alone. He was accused of being a warlock, and of cursing the children. He was lynch mobbed, and died of his wounds; since he was unliked by the community, this has gone unpunished. Of course, when the deaths kept happening, people realized their mistake, but it was too late for Mr. Coulter.

  16. Lorna’s Place. Lorna Milliner (F age 58) lives here along with her daughter Charity, Clifford, and her grandsons Jasyn and Piter. Piter is a newborn. They used to have two other children, but one died of a flux, and the other got trampled in a farming accident; they would have been aged 10 and 8, had they still been alive.

Hayzel (F Age 10) ST 8 DX 10 IQ 10 HT 10, Empathy, Blonde, smiles a lot, except when she hears anything about the Breath Stealer or the dead babies, when she will start crying. Very empathetic; she is very sad that so many families lost their babies. She is also fond of animals (and will be delighted with Mr. Wiggles and Norrie).
Alan Gerlof (M age 38) ST 12 DX 10 IQ 10 HT 12 Married to Sophia and has three children of his own, plus an adopted child. (Eliana, Eadric, Aidan, and Elodie) Mostly a field hand, but also has crafting skills, so he does a lot of repairs around the hamlet.

Eliana (F age 17) ST 10 DX 11 IQ 10 HT 9, Field hand. She has a tendency to get short of breath; this is not the Breathstealer, but the result of a childhood illness that reduces her endurance so she can’t work as long without a rest.

Aidan (M age 13) ST 10 DX 10 IQ 11 HT 11 Magery (but undiscovered he will likely detect one or more of the party’s magic items; there is also a good chance he will exhibit curiosity about them and want to examine them. He won’t know why, just that they seem “interesting”.

He is married to Lana, and has two kids, Eliana and Malena.

House 4:

  18. Northhamlet. 9 houses; a total of 45 people live here. Between them, they have three wagons, two carts, and 8 horses to draw them and do the plowing.

  19. Undrite Steading. Taking the name of their steading from their liege lord (who technically owns it), these two buildings are the residence of 26 farmhands.

  20. Manor House of Baronet Undrite. Makes wine.

  21. Riverview Hamlet. 11 families live here, for a total of 59 people. There are often tents pitched along both sides of the roadway during the times of the year when manpower is necessary. These tents can add up to 40 more people, as is the case during the month of Harvest. There are three newborns here, one in a house, two in tents.

  22. Mâku Steading. One house, large extended three generational family of 15 Orcs. Large barn, with wagon, 2 carts, and 2 horses. The horses are also used to plow as well as pull the wagons. One of the fields nearby is a pig paddock, and is one of their main products.

  23. Shaká Winery. Two houses, one winemaking facility. The houses hold one extended family with 3 generations. Orcish, 24 people. They make both grape wines and wines made from the fruit of the nearby orchard and the berry farm nearby as well. Shaká Zûmug, head winemaker and paterfamilias. Age 62. ST 13, DX 10, IQ 10, HT 12.

  26. Resinger Hamlet. Barely a hamlet, with only three families, but it’s more than a steading, and they like the idea of being called a “hamlet”. Julian Resinger (headman) has 4 Humans in his family; the other families have 5 (Orc) and 3 (Orc). The orchard they tend is mangos and avocados.

  27. Zâthra Steading. The house is situated by a small cluster of jungle plants, which are home to some colorful birds and small jungle animals, but it’s not really big enough for any jungle predators to take up residence. Zâthra and her wife Ûshbaka don’t have children, although they share their house with 4 other farmworkers.

  28. Brook Steading. Takes its name from the nearby stream. A Human family of four lives here, along with a pair of farmhands (who just had a baby). They are known for their whiskey distilling, and make about three barrels a year, aged in their basement. They tend to release a barrel only after it’s aged for at least 8 years. Their oldest barrel is 18 years.

  29. Barleyrye Steading. An extended family of Orcs live here (a total of 9 people).

  30. Waterhouse Steading. John Waterhouse is the headman of this steading (Human). One house, one barn, with cart and two horses. Has dairy cows, and sells his cheese in Rhades (what isn’t kept back as tax payments, that is). 3 family members, 5 live-in field hands.
