Mithril

Mithril is a valuable, lightweight silver that is stronger and more flexible than tempered steel but at half the weight. It is perhaps the most coveted material on Scandagliare and can only be mined at the Pillars of Mith by select dwarven clans.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Mithril is a silver colored metal. It is as hard as steel but half the weight.   When worked like steel, it becomes a wonderful material from which to create armor and is occasionally used for other items as well. Most mithril armors are one category lighter than normal for purposes of movement and other limitations.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Mithril is known for being lightweight and incredibly flexible. A chain mail shirt is soft enough to lay on bare skin, yet strong, if not stronger than full plated armor. It is known for staying cool even when introduced to heat and does not thermally conduct like other metals.
Additionally, mithril is more susceptible to enchantment than common steel.

Geology & Geography

Mithril can only be found in layers underneath the magma in the Pillars of Mith. This is considered one of the hottest volcanoes in the world and requires mithril and enchantments in order to procure. During the rare moments that the pillars erupt, chunks of mithril ore can be found in the ultramafic rocks.

History & Usage

Everyday use

Mithril is almost exclusively used for armor and protection. Sometimes small nuggets are sold to those who travel to the Pillars of Mith. These really serve the purpose of expensive jewelry and memorabilia of the travel.

Cultural Significance and Usage

The Pillars of Mith are considered a national treasure and is considered one of the crowned jewels of the Dorin Mountain Range. All members of Clan Dorinsaxe wear mithril or its refined version, dorinsrok. Mithril is held as a "honorous" metal as one who is adorned with mithril has more likely done something great to be bestowed with it.

Distribution

Trade & Market

Only select dwarven clans are allowed to mine and smith mithril from the Pillars of Mith. Due to its exclusivity on top of its artificial scarcity, not only is it a hard material to come by but that which can be found is incredibly expensive.

Law & Regulation

Fordgiar holds a monopoly on mithril and strives to ensure it stays that way. There are only three known clans who are allowed to mine and smith the Pillars of Mith where nearly all the world's source of mithril comes from.
