S27. What the heck is a Manse? Report
General Summary
After meeting Xanth in the ruins of Conyberry, dropping off the bell at Butterskull Ranch for safekeeping, the heroes headed into Neverwinter Wood to find the place where the evil orc spellcasters were hold up. Xanth called it a manse, whatever that is.
They arrived near sundown, and staked the place out waiting for the moment just before dawn. Pigs were eating at the pumpkins in the patches that surrounded the vine-overgrown 2-story building. There were stone steps up to front doors. These, under a balcony that also seemed to lead to more doors upstairs. The vines that have overgrown the walls may have covered windows, if there were any.,
In the pre-dawn darkness, the adventurer sneaked around the north side of the Manse, and surprised a couple of sleeping boar, which they dispatched quickly. Then found a door that led into a kitchen area. They crept in and started to explore. A wrecked pantry full of bird and nests, and a dining room full of little trig blights. Shattering the twig blights, they continued. Another door revealed an open courtyard under the cloudy sky with a well in the middle, from, which grew gnarled vines. Ozus also heard orcs talking about some kind of assault against a place with a palisade or something.
The party queued up on the doors to the courtyard, and Ozus called out in orcish a kind of distress call to lure the orcs into the courtyard. As they started to come find out what was going on, one of the Anchorites of Talos came to a different door to the courtyard and spied the adventurers starting to engage the orcs. He raised the alarm and called for everyone to attack them. A swarm of twig blights with needly little fingers launched themselves into the courtyard while vine blights crawled up and out of the well. Orcs ran into the courtyard and down an upstairs hall to attack some of the party that had taken up vantage points at upstairs windows and even fired into the room where the orcs were stationed.
A hearty battled followed with blood, guts, twigs and vines flying in every direction. But soon, the adventurers had beaten them all down, but Grannoc himself, their leader. He became surrounded by them, and began to call up lightning.
