S20. After Thundertree Report

General Summary

Our adventurers have recovered from their tussle with the Green Dragon, Venomfang, and have taken a well-needed and well-deserved rest. Every adventurer has taken time to reflect not only on their mortality and how fragile it may be at times, but also on their growing skills and abilities.   As they gather their belongings and newly-won treasures to head out, there are several ideas about where to go next. Before they leave the cottage they were in, hoof-beats are heard rapidly approaching.
Once again, the group encounters Xanth the Centaur who has traveled farther north and away from the Wood than he ever goes, but he has been in search of the party, Torgan in particular.   He tells them that he has seen some orcish spellcasters, one he knows is Grannoc, with some others. He was able to listen in on part of their conversation as they passed him, unaware of his presence, and he tells what he has learned. They were apparently coming from the coast, bragging about being at a place called the Tower of Storms and participating in a ritual of some sort. None of it sounded good.   He offered to track them through the Wood to discover where they are based, exactly, and get back to them with the location. They agree to meet near Conyberry within the tenday.   The party continues to the south, staying near the High Road, and camping one night. The next day they travel past the Wayside Inn that is finishing up construction and continued to the coast, with the info gathered from at least one of the workers that they have been close to the coast and seen "a scary lighthouse what has called ships in to crash on the rocks below it." Along the horizon they can clearly see the signs of a rapidly gathering storm, some which looks quite unfriendly and even supernatural. At the 100' high cliff's edge, the party discusses the view ahead, which includes the 80' outcropping of stone upon which looms said lighthouse with a crazy green light that is pulsing like a heartbeat. There is a raised jetty of sorts, that must spend its time underwater during high tide, being sloshed over by the churning, stormy sea. They hear a woman's voice, and then hear her sing...as she takes flight and heads toward the lighthouse. She has more wings than clothes and her song charms two of them.   The charmed ones, Sir Nesbit and Torgan, are barely kept from walking right off the cliff to the rocky beach 100' below. They take aim with spell and arrow to hurt the harpy, but fail to hill her. Other harpies begin their song, and they all seem to come under the spells at one moment or another...and most of them take the leap off the cliff.   At some point, all the adventurers are at the bottom of the cliff, whether by their own free will via a switchback stair in the cliff face, or not by way of gravity.   looking up from the rocky sand, Torgan is greeted by a giant crab, waving at him and asking if he's OK. For moment, the dwarf takes this as confirmation that he did not survive the fall down the cliff. Turns out that this crab has offered to retrieve some treasure for him if he will help his mistress find rest from her torment. His mistress is an elf that gave him the power to speak Common and made him a little smarter than the average crustacean. Her name is Myraal, but she was killed by a horrible orc named Moesko, who also took from her a glowing conche shell that was her spell focus. This has caused her to remain in this world as a banshee, unable to find rest until she has the shell returned to her and he killed brought to justice.   While Torgan and the crab converse, the others find said banshee and attack her. Toll of Dead sounds off across the beach. I wonder who did that? Well, naturally, she wails just as some others arrive in the cave, dropping Sir Nesbit into a catatonic state that appears to be very much like death...or at least patiently waiting for it, should the banshee handle the rest and come back to finish the job with a deadly necrotic touch. Those who didn't drop take some psychic damage and perhaps wish they had. Just past the banshee cave, they each try to continue on, but are, one a time, washed into the sea (or jump in to join the swim party). Kanenas is really excited by this and grows to much larger than his normal size, completely unaware of the giant shark that will chomp into his leg seconds later.   So. Harpies. Banshee. Giant Shark. Giant Speaking Crab. Raging Storm. Purple Lightning. Green pulsing lighthouse. And where is Jareth in all this mess? Who knows. He's had to step away for a minute to use the little Monk's room. Hopefully, he will be back soon so he can help with this fine mess.
