Thurstan

Thurstan Bellias Drummond (a.k.a. Judge)

We hold the line, Jon. It's what we do - what we have to do.
— Thurstan to Black Alder.
Thurstan Drummond is the current warden of the city of Wayford in southeastern Ardran and the unofficial leader of the local militia group known as 'The Rivermen'. A man of strict moral principle, the lead-up to the Durranian conflict saw Thurstan attempting to quell local rebellious sentiment and instead enter diplomatic talks with members of the imperial court. This stringent pacifistic approach even saw the man going as far as to try and imprison a local man of Wayford for the sabotage of Durranian supplies, an action which saw much of the public begin to regard him as an imperial sympathizer and earned him his back-handed nickname, "Judge."   This non-violent outlook was tried and broken, however, following the Slaughter at Havenbridge during which eleven Ardranic citizens were killed by the occupying imperial forces after an unorganized fight broke out from various rebel sources. Believing that it would be better for the local rebels to be united under a single banner rather than to have multiple competing factions within the border of a single city, Thurstan set about speaking with the de facto 'leaders' of each small resistance band, easily able to convince most of them to unify and create the band of guerrilla fighters now commonly known as "The Rivermen."

Morality & Philosophy

Thurstan is a man of strict moral principle, a quality which has earned him praise and condemnation in equal amounts over his time serving as Warden. Above all else, he is perhaps best known for the pacifistic outlook which many consider to be foolhardy in an era which seems to inevitably lead towards war. Though he has since abandoned his strict adherence to non-violence-only tactics after it was seen that appeasement would be ineffective against the empire at their doorstep, Thurstan nevertheless attempts to act with violence only when necessary and bestow these values onto the civilians in his militias.   Above all else, Thurstan opposes the Durranian invasion on an ideological standpoint rather than a territorial one, and has stated on many occasions that he fights namely with the goal of upholding democracy within the River Cities rather than letting them fall to one of the many surrounding empires.
