Jonathan Whitegrove

Jonathan Edwardson Whitegrove (a.k.a. Black Alder)

Young men seem ever eager for war. I blame the poets.
Jonathan Whitegrove is a figure of the Ardranian governing council and the current Warden of Brimmingshire, a semi-autonomous hold on the southern end of Lake Hearthreed. Primarily governing from Brimmings, the more southern of the hold's cities, Whitegrove is a gruff and occasionally standoffish man who has garnered the reputation of a firm hand in legal matters but an altruistic approach in dealing with the disadvantaged in a general sense.   Formerly a head of the Durranian House Whitegrove of Falstead, Jonathan abdicated his position in 1459 when his house willingly offered levies for the imperial guard to secure the newly acquired territory of Daltonshire. To deny a direct request would have been treasonous towards the crown, though Jonathan believed that offering the manpower without prompting served both as an outright endorsement of the imperial expansionism and to paint a picture of money-driven groveling. His given title, 'Black Alder', was made in direct reference to his former house's sigil: a white alder tree atop a bright hill.   Elected to the position of Warden in 1462, he is the governing council's most recent member but has quickly endeared himself to much of the population due to his attempts to combat the rampant poverty which has plagued Brimmingshire's cities throughout living memory. His seasoned history of warfare and politics alike has served as a particular aid to the council in the wake of Durrania's claim of conquest, though has come into conflict with other council members due to a tendency to lean towards shows of force and punitive countermeasures when dealing with imperial troops.   Whitegrove is the only member of the council to both officially endorse and directly supply the militias which have arisen in opposition to Durranian encroachment, stating himself as a firm believer that the region's lack of any standing army aside from the city guard was a sign of weakness which allowed the empire to declare domain over the river cities so frivolously. He additionally has voiced strong opposition to the feudal practice of levying, believing that only those with proper knowledge and training should ever be sent into war.
