Telling Time - Candle Clock

Time in a Day

A day is divided into 3 candles, a morning candle, a day candle and an evening candle.   Each candle is divided into 4 nubs. Time is measured in nubs.   Half a nub is called a nib, which translates to an hour. The shortest measure of time is half a nib (half an hour).     Time is told in terms of rings of the candle. Eight o’clock would be the 4th ring of the morning candle. Elven o’clock would be half of the 2d ring of the day candle.   This may be abbreviated to: 4th ring of the morning or Morning's 4th ring or even simply Morning's 4th.   To summarize: the [morning’s|day’s|evening’s] [first|second|third|fourth]: An expression of the current time analogous to saying 8 AM. The morning candle covers midnight to 8 AM, the day candle covers 8 AM to 4 PM. The evening candle covers 4 PM to midnight.   Alarms are set by putting a bead or a nail into the candle and when the wax melts, the nail falls to the metallic striking surface below the candle and creates a clattering noise.   Rich folks have time candles in glass containers allowing full visibility of the candle. Poor folks have pottery time candle containers with only a sliver of the candle visible through the gaps in the pottery sheath, which forms the rings.

Days in a Week

The week is divided into seven days:
  1. Firstday
  2. Washday
  3. Pickday
  4. Ashday
  5. Fishday
  6. Marketday
  7. Wheelday

Seasons in the Year

The year is considered to start on the Winter Equinox.   The year is divided into four seasons, each centered around their Equinox.   There are thirteen weeks in a season.   Dates in a year is generally listed as to the season, which week in the season it is, starting count from the seasonal equinox and then the year of the Claudin.
