Magic Overview

Those with magical talent are mostly accepted in their communities as long as they behave responsibly and are at a low level of magical power. Above the Senior Worker level of talent, magic users must be trained and be able to show lineage. Both Provincial and Royal Guards have a Mage Squad. Guards of all types may ask to see a magic user's lineage.
There is a magical college, called the Tower of Rust, in the land at the center of the four Rust Lakes at the southern end of Haktheen. The college actually has buildings for each of the schools of magic and a rust-colored tower at the Center. Each building is its own style, based on the discipline. There are buildings in the central courtyard where everyone can gather. Training for higher levels of proficiency involves learning focus, hand gestures, and words to help direct the form that the magic will take.
Mana is needed to fuel magic. Everything has some mana in it. For a quick job, the magician can use their own energy but this can exhaust them if they do too much. They will need to eat and/or sleep to replenish. For larger or more complex work, they need to pull mana from something or someone else. If they don't give that thing a chance to recharge, they can drain it/them. If an inanimate object is drained, it becomes useless for mana and physically fragile. If a living thing is drained, it may die. Note that mana is not life force. Life force uses mana for energy, so it is possible for someone to be drained and near death but then receive mana and revive.
Objects can be created to store, focus, filter, and trigger magic. Batteries can be made from almost anything but must be modified so it can store magic. The item could be jewelry, clothing, a rock, and so on.
Focus -- Used to focus and enhance the magic. Can be anything but is often something that can be directed, such as a wand or a blade.
Filter - Can be used to dampen or boost magic, often used for things like keeping youngsters with magical talent from wrecking things before they are trained. Can also be used to keep an area magic-free.
Trigger -- Often used as tools by non-magic users. Think of a magical means of starting fire or preserving food.
Talisman -- Used for asking for blessings of a deity, not usually for a specific purpose like prosperity or protection. Instead, the house might be warded against flood or fire.
Remember that, while the Deities may be asked for help in the performance of magic, the schools of magic do not map directly to the Gods and Goddesses.
