Ocean's Lattice

Known locally as "Eston's Folly", the Ocean's Lattice is a large chain net that can be raised to halt any incoming or outgoing vessels from the Blacktide Bay. One end is located at Isenwold, the other at Basincall.
The net runs across many smaller man-made islands with towers on them. These towers are always manned by a small garrison of 2-4 soldiers. If the net begins to be raised by one of the port cities, then the soldiers are responsible to begin raising the next portion of the net, creating a domino effect. The nets are raised semi-annually for inspection and repair.
The term "Eston's Folly" is derived from a former ruler of Zapis, Eston Redault. Eston was plagued by nightmares of invasion by sea, both by opposing kingdoms and dangerous creatures. Instead of building a fleet of ships to rebuff this, Eston nearly depleted the kingdom's stone and iron reserves in an effort to build his "ultimate defense".
Most agree that the only good thing to come out of the construction was the discovery of the Ironwing Mines to the west. The net in particular required an astronomical amount of iron, and when availability began to run low Eston send out an army of surveyors to discover new sources of raw material. The metals found in the mines have greatly served the kingdom over the past century.
Eston Redault died mysteriously in his sleep a month after the project was complete. He was not missed.
