Oav

The only kingdom besides the Zapis Kingdom about which much is known, Oavians have been trading with Zapis for generations and the two kingdoms have established a cordial, if not overly fond relationship.   The Oavian peoples appear uncultured in custom and mannerisms when compared with the standard Zapis citizen, and almost barbaric when compared with the rigidly formal and reserved Tsarvish. Oavian citizens typically cloth themselves in furs, are loud and blunt, and have low standards on what is considered "hygienic". The Kingdom is located far to the north, where they have established control over a vast area of low-lying plains. Though tribal in culture, the Kingdom of Oav's technological, military and magical capabilities are on par with what can be found in Zapis.   Oavians are semi-nomadic, following the various bestial herds that wander the plains in large patriarchal family groups. A few moderately-sized settlements do exist, including at least one large port city called Grimhold where the Zapis trading ships are allowed to dock.   To an Oavian, family is everything. Business are owned as family enterprises, ships are crewed only by kin (though this can include distant cousins many times removed), and leadership is passed from father to son (or the next closest male kin). Women are respected members of society but are forbidden from holding authority in a few notable instances, such as become clan chief or captaining a ship.   Their ships are of simply and sturdy design, but are fantastically ornamented with mythical beasts for mastheads and brightly painted hulls. The sails are a particular source of pride for the crew. Sails start as simple white cloth when a ship is first launch, but over time families weave intricate designs into them, telling the stories of their clans, notable events that happened while voyaging, and so on. Losing a sail in a storm or fire is considered to be an omen of terrible luck for the family, and sailors will willing risk their lives to save even a piece of a sail during a disaster.   For trade, they bring primarily animal goods (fur, scales, leather, bone tools, etc) as well as some finished goods.  Metal work is rare, though what is brought for trade tends to be of exquisite make. They display have a broad range of desires in return, though Oavian traders are almost always interested treated lumber, live animals and fine jewelry.
