KalamisShelter

History

In the city of Trakaris, the population is split between the extemely rich inhabitants of the Spire and the poor at the bottom of the social and geographical ladder. For most of the trakarian people a visit to a doctor, or someone who at least pretends to be one, costs usually more than they earn in awhole year and so most of them resort to uncovential treatments and the social shunning of obviously sick people.
After visiting Trakrais on one of his journeys, wandering scholar Kalamis Telaf decided to try and help those who don´t have the means to help themselve. With his connections established over decades of travel, he bought a considerable plot in the bottom level of Trakaris and began to reconstruct the existing building into part hospital part community centre.
At first the neighbours thought it was just a merchant who didnt had the financial means for housing on the Spire but over the years of free treatment and advise from Kalamis and their slowly growing staff, the shelter began one of the few safe and neutral grounds in Trakaris.

Purpose

The main function of the shelter is that of a hospital to treat common diseases and injuries and it even has room for some long-term treatments. Besides its medical purpose the rest of the property serves as a gathering centre for the trakarian poor and is famed for its neutrality. It is one of the few places in Trakaris where members of rival gangs can meet without killing each other.
In the last years Kalamis also began to expand the underground and a third level to have more room for their medical facilities as well as a potential resting place for some of the many homeless people.

Structure

Currently the shelter has two floors, small front and backyards as well as a stone wall surrounding the property. Its size is comparable to a small noble mansion and there is construction work for a third floor and a basement currently ongoing. On the front side, the main door leads into the reception area occupying a quarter of the first floor. Here patients and clients wait until they are either brought upstairs into the hospital or to the communal area in the back and in the rare cases to the small side office reserved for paperwork and important meetings. The communal area is a big room consisting of roughly the half of the whole floor that is often separated into smaller areas by curtains. Small doors here lead into the backyard and the office.
The second floor is comepletely reserved for medical work containing the following: A waiting area, an examination room, an operating room and a dorm for long-term patients.
