Khandak
Khandak culture is the term applied by southerns to the various hunter/gatherer and pastoralist societies of the northern mountains and tundra. Both Orc and Human tribes share common cultural traditions and therefore the Khandak cultural label can be used for both of them.
Khandak cultures place high value on physical fitness and ability - their environment does not allow for non-productive members of the tribe. Gender roles differentiation is normally minimal - females obviously have to bear and raise young, but can also be warriors and hunters, while males that are gatherers or herders are valued as much as those who hunt, so long as they contribute to the survival of the tribe positively.
Inter-tribal or inter-clan cooperation is rare because there is constant competition for the same resources, but at the same time so is open warfare - it would be too wasteful of people who are needed for survival for them to be killed needlessly. Instead, when two tribes or clans compete, there is ritualised displays of aggression and assertiveness which allow the participants to guage the the relative strength. The weaker clan or tribe will then submit or withdraw to avoid destruction. Only when two tribes are almost equally matched is there anything like warfare. Even if that happens, the winning side has little to gain except territory because Khandak tribes don't have wealth or other material goods - their only asset is their people, who have normally been killed as a result of the war.
Khandak culture is highly egalitarian and ultilitarian. People are respected if they contribute to the survival of the tribe. Once they cease to be contributors, or have any potential to contribute, they lose respect. The elderly in Khandak culture will often sacrifice themselves if they are unable to contribute any more, normally by refusing food at times when it is scarce until they die of starvation, or by continuing with dangerous activities until they are killed.
