Session 023: Report

General Summary

Your meeting with the ghost of Veleth went quite well, all things considered. The founder of the Khosul received you amicably, and agreed to tell you of her woes. One of the grave robbers, a gnome or perhaps a halfling, had snatched her mantle, a precious item with much sentimental value to her. The ghostly matriarch vowed that she would scour the surrounding region, spreading the curse of undeath until the item was returned to her tomb. You promised to retrieve the mantle for her, and so she allowed you to depart in search of it.
You spent some time scouring the riverside, hoping to find a site to cross onto the other bank, where you had earlier heard the sound of celebration. You traversed upstream, and found yourself in a small fishing hamlet, a few miles from the tomb of the Khosul. You talked to one of the fishermen, and learned that the grave robbers you found in the tombs had arrived but a couple of weeks earlier from the direction of Stonewell. Later, the man had seen a lone figure emerge from the cursed tombs, running in desperation back towards the town.
You arrived at the canyon town in the late hours of the night, and after a night of good rest, began to plan your search for the thief. The grave robbers were easily identified as laborers and other poor folk by their clothing, and so Theodore sent his servant to the Miner's District to ask around for information. Meanwhile, you conversed with the Lieutenant, who promised that her guards would prevent any of the thief's description from slinking out of town.
Theo's gnomish servant was mugged when he went to look for information, but you were able to find the culprit and got some information in the process. A gnomish mason by the name of Pozu had apparently ventured out of town some time ago with a group of six other laborers, but only he had returned, now a nervous wreck of a man. You decided to pay him a visit in the Miner's District.
The gnome didn't put up much of a fight, and you were able to squeeze some information out of him. The group of grave robbers had ventured into the tombs to retrieve items for Melgrom, a traveling dwarven merchant who spent much of his time in Stonewell. He told you the dwarf was a collector of rare antiques, who had promised great sums for the mantle in specific. But, Melgrom had underdelivered on his promised payment, even threatening to have Pozu killed if the gnome spoke to anyone about the venture. The thief said he would skip town after your conversation, not willing to wait for the trader to deliver on his threat.
You brought this information to the Lieutenant, but without solid proof, she wasn't willing to make a move against such a prominent and influential figure. She promised to keep a closer eye on the merchant, but Melgrom would have to be caught red-handed. You began to make plans, and managed to secure a dinner with the dwarf by pretending to be prospective buyers for the rare and expensive piece of clothing. With the day just past noon, you still had time to prepare your plan of action, to recover the mantle yourself, or to come up with proof to have Melgrom apprehended.
