Session 015: Report

General Summary

As the evening's celebrations died down and most of the inn patrons settled down for the night, you were coerced outside by Nine-Claws, the Tabaxi woman you had previously seen in Rufio's office. She and her group of sellswords were intensely suspicious, even nervous of your sudden appearance at the inn. However, you were able to convince her that you were there to hunt the shadar-kai, just as she was.
Having eased her sense of caution, Nine-Claws retired to the inn with her companions. Because you heard that they planned to venture out for the hunt the next day, you decided to forgo your nightly rest and instead make your way towards the shadar-kai immediately.
After talking to an Ashmane guard just outside the dwarven hold, you learned that the shadar-kai inhabited a sprawling labyrinth of caverns known as The Nexus, directly east of the city. He also shared with you bits of local geography, and you were able to piece a rough map of the surrounding Underdark.
After several hours of walking, your travels brought you to a section of the caverns that narrowed down into numerous small passages. You recognized this to be the Nexus, by the guard's description. As you were planning to delve further, you were surprised and held at crossbow point by a group of Ashmane dwarves, bearing the garb of scouts.
You learned from the dwarves that the shadar-kai had abandoned their usual habitation and had recently moved somewhere to the north. However, the situation quickly grew tense, as you tried to pass yourselves as secondary scouts sent on a mission from the hold. The leader of these rangers grew suspicious and angry, and after a brief verbal confrontation, they retreated towards the west, warning you not to follow.
You were able to follow the tracks of the shadar-kai further east, delving ever downwards, and you eventually found yourselves at a fork in the road. You followed a different set of tracks north, which lead you through a dense forest of gigantic mushrooms. Another couple of hours later, and the fungi gave way to a drier, hotter clime, and you saw a ruined building in the distance, partially swallowed by and leaning into a glowing pool of magma. Numerous lean figures could be spotted around the building.
You began to approach the site, dashing from cover to cover in case something lurked in the cavern around you. Before you could make it to the building, a figure appeared from the dark, clad in dark robes and wearing a mournful silver mask of the shadar-kai. He questioned your intentions, and after Vethykos introduced himself as a servant of the Raven Queen, you were met with mockery. He proclaimed that their people had found a new master.
