Lord Provisioner of the Sentinel Order

The Lord Provisioner of the Sentinel Order is the order's most senior logistics officer, and a member of the Sentinel Council. While each of the six Disciplines has their own extensive logistics operation, the Lord Provisioner is responsible for the procurement of items that all Disciplines need equally, and for provisioning and feeding the central base at Sentelthor.   As such, it is a hugely important position for the success of the order's operations, and the Lord Provisioner has access to his own office of scribes and stables to arrange the vast logistics train needed to keep the order operational. Finally, he also oversees the initial selection and assignment of candidates - before the Lord Marshal oversees their initial training.   Their rank as a lord is intended to help with requisitioning and purchasing in the field - but in recent centuries, the post has rarely been filled by anyone of noble birth.

Requirements

Like other officers of the Sentinel Council, the Lord Provisioner is elected by the rest of the Council - and similarly, there are formal requirements that they:
  • Are at least 30 years of age
  • Have served at least 10 years in the Order
  • Have held the rank of at least Chapter Commander for 5 years
The role naturally suits a member of the Grey Sentinels, and they have dominated the role since their separation. However, the Council is usually willing to entertain good candidates from other Disciplines, if they have the relevant experience. While there is little interest from individual Sentinels (as their logistics flows through the Discipline and Chapter), there have been instances of large merchant guilds or traders seeking to corrupt candidates - in the hope of getting favourable contracts once in post.

History

With the establishment of the Grey Sentinels, the absolute authority of the Lord Provisioner has declined sharply, and recent holders have found themselves a manager between the powerful Grey Sentinels in Sentelthor and the structures of every other Discipline. Nevertheless, the role remains a prestigious one - and the holder can provide strategy and counsel to the Sentinel Council when needed. This means, in recent decades, it has been a useful role to put experienced administrators and leaders - with modest responsibilities, but much authority.
