Edvar II
Edvar II 'the Exile' was the first (and only) Weldic King to rule entirely in Exile. He succeeded to his (now childless) uncle's throne when Markus III died of grief and shame three years into the Exile. Although he was not destined to lead the Welds back to their homeland, it was his bravery and warlike resolve which formed the Welds - and all the living forces in the Alderi Dominion - into an effective and motivated military force. Though Conrad I conquered with the Creator's blessing, it is indisputable that he used Edvar's army to do so.
Edvar was 16 when the Breach occurred, and was a newly pledged knight in the household of his uncle, the King. He was a younger son, and destined for a life in royal service - and the hope of military glory against the Tetra, Alder, or forces of Jellnev. Instead, shortly after he had received his knightly sword, word arrived of an unstoppable horde of the dead descending from the south west. His early manhood was spent in the saddle, fleeing alongside the King he was sworn to protect. He was not present when the Crown Prince was cut down and devoured - nor even when his own father (the King's younger brother) sacrificed himself to save refugees fording the Ruck.
He did witness, however, the deaths which would make him king. His elder brother - leading those same refugees at his late father's command - was killed in the Battle of the Greenwood as the family regrouped around the King. He had no choice but to follow his King, however, as they rode through the night, benefitting from the sacrifice of his brother and many others. He was now second in line to the Weldic throne, and thus removed from the household of the new Crown Prince, and instead attached to the increasingly ragged retinue protecting the King himself.
After the forces of the living were sealed behind Guthrum's Gate, Dunold (the new Crown Prince) convinced his father to allow a sortie against a seemingly small band of Empty outside the gate. Unprepared for the ferocity of the dead, the party led by the Crown Prince was cut down swiftly - and it was Edvar's duty to seal the gates, forbidding more knights from needlessly dying in honour of their prince. After that, it was his duty to inform the King both of his son's death, and Edvar's own promotion. He lived the next two years close by the dying King's side - growing daily angry and committed to the total defeat of the Empty.
Those who gathered by his own deathbed many years later insist that the Creator granted him a vision of his son's final victory - he died smiling and mumbling "Weldmere."
