Arcane Scarification
Overview
While as tangible and varied as actual scars. Arcane Scarification is more a misnomer than a literal scaring of the body. This condition refers to a suite of permenent imparements that occur on an Arcane spell casters body in the event of a spell failure. While all realms of magic can result in spells backfiring, Arcane spells are more likely to result in a dissasterous outcome. Sometimes, these mishapps result in damage to not only the caster, but those around them as well. While the source is Arcane spell failure, not all failure will result in Arcane Scarifcation. Cuts and burns from the wild discharge of power may naturally heal over time, or reduce mundane scaring that is otherwise repariable. However, those with twisted lighting shaped scars, or incurable sensory ailments are chided by the masses as having "reached too far" in their attempts for power. For those casters that "delved too deep", many worry about what other calamities these walking timebombs may cause... or have unknowingly done so already.Identifcation
Some forms of scarification can take the form of other, more mundane injuries. The loss of limb or senses are some of the most common outcomes of wayward Arcane spell fumbles. However, more exotic events can occur, particularily when coupled with the harnessing of pure elemental energy. An Arcane Elementalist may exhibit an unusual increase in Bone Density and difficulty moving as their bones over calcify, or their internal temperture may steadily rise as their core tempereture rises unnaturally. However, they generally share the same hallmarks of an absence of wounding. Those who have lost a limb or sense are often found to have had their wounds cleanly severd, or the abject abscence of the nerves that would have enabled their previous senses. While Eye witness can usually attest to the great discharge of power that occurs alongside the Arcane mishap, Second-Aid may struggle to identify the source until treatment is attempted.Treatment
Attempts at healing Arcane Scarifcation have generally been met with confused innefficacy. Research by recognized healer guilds have found that the scarification process seems to alter the body to a state of new normalacy. That is, attempts by healers to revert the damage done has shown no impact to those who are more heavily scarred. In the case of a phsyical or mental imparement, the caster may require an assistant or new living accomidations to meet their daily needs. Arcane researches have poured much of their time into researching Arcane methods of curing the ailments of their theoretical bretheren. The reserach is ongoing.Imapct on City Life
Like all difficulties and hardships in The Consul, these more permenet ailments have given rise to a number of buisnes and trade professions that otherwise may have not been. The most notable and notorious are the medical branch of the College of Changelings. These arcane practitioners have spent years breading and modifing service animals for a bevy of applications. However, their most profitable (at least in the public's eye) is The Assistant: a specific breed of dog with human levels of intellignece and a predispostion towards pair bonding with their owner. For those with the wealth to afford one, obtaining an Assistant is a chance at living independently that few others can obtain in the bustling citylife of The Consul.
