According to the old beliefs, domovoi are guardian spirits of the household. They are highly revered and bring benefit to the home where they can: helping with small tasks like churning butter and mending clothes, and protecting the household from sickness, bad weather, intruders and misfortune. Since each household only ever has one domovoi, it is crucial to keep them happy. They enjoy offerings of food left over from the family meal, or a piece of salted bread wrapped in linen left in the hall or under the stove. These helpful fey can tell the fate of the family they are attached to, but they grow annoyed if asked to do so too often. When a domovoi is angry, it can be appeased by the blood of a rooster slain at midnight being spread around its living space.
