The Spirit Plane

The Spirit Plane lies at the innermost layer of its planisphere, connected innately with the Life and Void planes, and it is known by a host of names that fail to truly understand its nature.   To understand the nature of the Spirit Plane, one must understand its significance as a boundary, a fugue plane, between the Prime plane and its planisphere, where energy is captured, dispersed and ejected. Like its Ray, the nature of the Spirit Plane is entropy - foreign contaminants are worn down over time and dispersed, and it is here we can harness a variety of necrotic evocations and observe the souls of the dead as they fade.   No native inhabitants of this plane exist, as the nature of the plane is to unmake and undo.

Vestiges

Powerful souls that are drawn into the plane, which are unable to return to their bodies, are able to persist on the plane for extended periods of time. These vestiges of powerful souls lose power over time, but are able to not only wield some of the power they did in life, but are able to project that into others for a short period of time. Those that have an understanding of renewal and entropy have an advantage here, as they are able to extend the time that they have, resulting in the most common vestiges being remnants of powerful healers, necromancers, shamans and heroes.   Examples of such beings might be legendary heroes, such as Saint Leomar, Exemplar Modwen or King Arthur, or powerful souls, such as Elminster, Kiaransalee, or an aspirant Vecna.

Haunts

Where the Spirit plane draws near other planes, and where there is dross energy permeating the immediate area, it is possible for dissolving spirits to take shelter within physical form to delay their eventual end. Such creatures are not necessarily considered to be undead, but can range from the restless dead of skeletons, draugr and ghosts, to the living constructs of treants and golems, or even simply investing otherwise mundane objects with power, such as with protected shrines, sacred swords and hallowed grave soil.
