Phiadie Terradust

Phiadie Terradust (a.k.a. Phia)

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Phia was born in the remote village of Freystarsi, a secluded settlement nestled on the outskirts of the northern Glosa. The village was a haven for those seeking solitude, often obscured by the dense forests and harsh, frigid winters that surrounded it. Her earliest memories, though hazy, are tied to the coven she was raised in — a group of nomadic witches who roamed not just the land but the boundaries of planes themselves. Phia’s birth, however, remains a mystery. There are no known records of her parents, and she was never told of the circumstances surrounding her arrival in the world.

Travelling seamlessly between the Material World, the Feywild, and the Shadowfell, the coven had learned how to tap into the raw magic of these planes. The witches were not merely practitioners of magic — they were custodians of knowledge, traversing the thin veils that separated the worlds, collecting the secrets hidden in forgotten places. The coven was a unique amalgamation of powerful and wise witches, each with their own specialities: elemental magic, chronomancy, planar rituals, and the arts of divine communication.

When she was old enough to travel alone, the coven recognized her hunger for lost knowledge, and they encouraged her journey into the forgotten corners of the world. The nomadic nature of her upbringing made her a natural wanderer, and she set off on her own with the blessing of the witches, carrying with her a satchel of ancient tomes and scrolls — materials often collected from ancient ruins or even abandoned temples. With her growing knowledge, Phia built an archive, collecting the last remnants of dying languages, forgotten rituals, and ancient philosophies.

Education

Phia's primary education came from within the coven, due to the nomadic nature of their lifestyle. From an early age, she was taught how to call upon the elements, how to shift between the material world and the other planes, and how to interact with the many spirits and deities who called those realms their home. She also learned about how to cultivate the natural world, what made up the land, and spellcraft.

Phia is currently a first-year student at Kireth, Institute of the Arcane. She is studying Scriptology at Krisrel College. The courses she is taking are: Introduction to Ancient Scripts; Preservation and Restoration of Magical Texts; and Scriptological Theory: Semiotics of Magic.

Employment

Phia has been volunteering a lot of her time at the Nexus, helping to organise matches that are on. She's helped out with assisting attendees, distributing enchanted programs that update during events, and providing magical earpieces for live commentary translations. She is hoping that, during her time at Kireth, she will take over the commentator duties.

Taboos

  • Destruction of knowledge: Phia has a profound reverence for texts, artifacts, and knowledge of all forms. The idea of destroying or defacing such objects fills her with anger and sadness. She has been known to intervene—even at great risk to herself—when someone attempts to destroy a book or ruin an artifact, seeing it as an attack on the collective history of the world.
  • Binding spirits or sentient entities: Raised in a coven that respected the autonomy of all beings, Phia sees binding spirits or planar entities as a grave moral violation. To her, cooperation and mutual respect are essential to working with otherworldly forces, and she will not tolerate any magic or ritual that enslaves or exploits such entities.
  • Shortcuts in learning: Phia believes that true mastery comes through dedication and effort. She views spells or charms that instantly grant knowledge as undermining the value of learning. This can make her stubborn about tackling challenges the "hard way," even when simpler solutions exist.
  • Broken promises: The coven taught Phia that words hold immense power, and breaking a promise disrupts not only trust but also the unseen energies of the world. She is particularly sensitive to this and avoids making commitments unless she is absolutely certain she can keep them. If someone breaks a promise to her, it’s difficult for them to regain her trust.

Personality Characteristics

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Savvies:
  • Scriptology Prodigy: Phia’s natural affinity for ancient scripts and her years of study in the coven have made her an expert in identifying, translating, and interpreting magical texts. Her ability to spot nuances in glyphs, runes, and semiotics sets her apart even among her peers at Kireth. She often sees patterns and connections others overlook.
  • Planar Navigation: Growing up among witches who traversed planes has given Phia a unique ability to sense and navigate the boundaries between worlds. She instinctively knows when the veil between realms is thinning and can adjust her approach to interact with the energies of the Feywild, Shadowfell, or Material Plane.
  • Athletic Competence: Years of trekking through the harsh wilderness of Glosa gave Phia exceptional stamina and agility. These skills translate well to her participation in sports like climbing and cross-country, where she thrives in challenging conditions.
Ineptitudes:
  • Cultural Norms: Phia’s nomadic upbringing left her with gaps in her understanding of common cultural traditions and humor. She often misinterprets idioms or jokes, sometimes responding in ways that bewilder her peers. While this can be endearing, it occasionally makes her feel like an outsider.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Despite her brilliance with magical artifacts and ancient texts, Phia struggles with mundane devices. Anything requiring gears, levers, or advanced technology often confounds her, leading to comical (and sometimes disastrous) results.
  • Focus on Individualism: Phia’s independent streak, cultivated by years of solitary travel and study, makes it difficult for her to thrive in rigidly structured teams. She prefers to solve problems her own way, which can sometimes cause friction in group settings.

Social

Social Aptitude

Phia is an extroverted person, and is confident talking to anyone. Whilst she is a social butterfly in the sense that she wants to get to know everyone, she doesn't necessarily blend in. The impact of her nomadic lifestyle means that Phia often doesn't understand common cultural jokes and phrases, and has her own very specific way of communicating.

Mannerisms

When speaking, Phia often uses her hands to trace glyphs or mimic shapes, adding a visual element to her words. Her movements are fluid and intentional, giving the impression that she is constantly weaving magic as she talks. A habit ingrained from her coven’s rhythmic chants, Phia taps out patterns on any surface when she’s deep in thought or waiting. It’s often a soothing ritual for her, though it sometimes annoys others.

Phia greets people with warmth and enthusiasm, often accompanied by an unfiltered smile or a spontaneous hug. While her exuberance can be refreshing, it occasionally catches more reserved individuals off guard. Her eyes light up with genuine curiosity whenever she encounters something new or intriguing. This focused gaze often makes others feel seen, though it can also be intense if she becomes fixated on someone.

Phia loves asking questions, often diving into tangents as her curiosity pulls her in unexpected directions. She has a habit of getting so absorbed in conversations that she forgets time or place.

Hobbies & Pets

Phia thrives on physical challenges and camaraderie, making her an active participant in Kireth’s archery, climbing, and cross-country teams. She loves the thrill of competition and sees sports as a way to build connections with others while testing her limits. However, few things excite Phia more than venturing into forgotten ruins or libraries. She relishes the thrill of uncovering lost relics and knowledge, treating each discovery as a piece of a larger puzzle. Since starting at Kireth, Phia has begun tinkering with runes, testing their properties, and experimenting with new combitions. She journals her findings, hoping to uncover new applications for these ancient symbols.

Speech

Having grown up in Freystarsi, her voice carries a lilting cadence reminiscent of the northern Glosa region. It’s subtle but gives her a melodic, almost song-like quality when she speaks. Phia occasionally slips into archaic phrases or uses words that are remnants of her coven’s planar travels. These phrases may sound peculiar or poetic to others.
