Freeport Guardsmen

The Sea Lord’s Guard has been around for nearly two centuries. Originally, this colorful group was little more than a band of brutes who enforced the Sea Lord’s will, but they gradually evolved into something of a police force. Based out of the Guardsmen's Facilities, patrols would walk the city (or most of it), ensuring some modicum of law and order prevailed.   To make matters worse, Sea Lord Milton Drac plundered the gold allocated for the Guard to build his lighthouse. The law abiding citizens of Freeport complained, but nothing was done. Hiring private protection became more and more common, and the size of the Guard shrank over the years, leaving them to only patrol The Old City  The Sea Lord’s Guard has CouncilorVerlaine. He now focuses more on his civic and political duties, leaving day-to-day operations to his capable second, Captain Emory Shent.   After the death of Verlaine. Milton Drac appointed a man named Melkior Maeorgan. Melkior is a cruel man who uses the Freeport Guardsmen as his personal enforcers. Anyone arrested by the guardsmen during this time were either beaten, or tossed into the Tombs. The unlucky ones found themselves subject to both lines of treatment.

Structure

There are six proper ranks in the Guard—guardsman, petty officer, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, and commander. Captain Emory Shent is strict about promotions, for he knows that unwarranted advancement breeds resentment and reduces morale. However, seeing the need to let soldiers advance through the ranks and have realistic goals, with so little room for promotion within the organization, he has recently implemented the rank of “Guardsman First Class.” His most accomplished soldiers can receive this distinction and thus take on more responsibilities in assisting their officers.   The guardsmen don’t get much pay for their service, but they receive free food, lodging, and uniforms. More money and more paid time off come with the higher ranks, so guardsmen work hard to climb to the top.

Culture

All members of the Guard are men, and almost all are humans. Some dwarves and a half-elves can be found in the service, but there are no halflings, orcs, or half-orcs among them. These races are not recruited, nor are they welcome to join. The Sea Lord’s Guard is the last conspicuously human and entirely male organization in Freeport.
