Hushstone Material in Rom | World Anvil

Hushstone

Hushstone is a particularly porous and inert stone that is used in soundproofing throughout the Idran empire. It is an essential part of trade within Idra. Modern Idran music would not be possible without the use of hushstone.

Geography

Hushstone is found in the northeastern corners of the Idran empire. Quarries have sprung up around these areas with the most productive being the Vashtan Quarry. The Vashtan Quarry was built in the second area that hushstone was found. The first area has been mined dry at this point.   It is unknown whether hushstone can be manufactured artificially, but Academy-trained musicians are hard at work on this possibility.

History & Usage

Discovery

Hushstone was initially discovered as part of an environmental survey in the northeast reaches of the Idran empire. The survey obtained samples of multiple different types of stones and metals and brought them back to the research facility in Oja. Within the labs, it was noted that the hushstone was not affected by music. Further research and development led to its use in soundproofing.

Everyday use

Hushstone is the main material used in Idran soundproofing. It is used in crystalaria, the lining of most rooms, and other places where music is performed.

Refinement

Hushstone is used in the state in which it is found in nature, but it does require processing into the correct shapes.

Hazards

No known hazardous materials are produced in the shaping of hushstone into soundproofing.

Environmental Impact

Mining of hushstone was initially performed at such a brisk pace that the first mine was first emptied completely of hushstone and then collapsed in upon itself. The surrounding environment was destroyed by the music that was used to extract the stone.

Reusability & Recycling

Hushstone is frequently recycled as prolonged use does not seem to decrease its potency.

Hushstone is a dark amber color. It's quite porous, which makes it incredibly light. The texture of the rock is rough.   Physically, hushstone is quite inert. It is not easily oxidized, flamable, or quick to degrade.
